If you've ever walked out of a difficult conversation thinking, "That is not at all how I meant that to land" — welcome. You're not bad at communicating. You just were never taught how it actually works. Neither was I, at first. I had to go study it.

I've spent my career in the communication classroom, and the thing that strikes me most consistently is this: the students who struggle aren't struggling because they're inarticulate or socially awkward. They're struggling because no one ever handed them a map. They don't know that communication is a system — that noise and context and perception shape every message before it even reaches another person. They don't know that conflict has identifiable styles, or that listening is a skill with learnable techniques, or that the incongruence between what you say and how your body says it is probably the single biggest trust-eroder in most relationships. Once they know these things? Everything changes.

That's what this school is built to give you. Not a motivational pep talk. Not "ten tips for better conversations." A real, structured education in how human communication works — the models, the research, the frameworks — delivered the way I'd deliver it in a university course: with rigor, with honesty, and with enough dry humor to make sure you're still awake by module three. We go from foundational theory (yes, we cover Shannon-Weaver, and yes, it will immediately make you rethink every miscommunication you've ever had) all the way through conflict navigation, intercultural competence, assertiveness, and persuasion. The arc is intentional. Each concept builds on the last.

I also want to address the objection I know some of you are carrying: "I'm not an academic. Is this going to feel like homework?" Fair concern. My teaching philosophy has always been that theory without application is just vocabulary, and application without theory is just guessing. So we do both. Every concept gets grounded in the kinds of conversations you're actually having — at work, at home, in the moments that matter. The academic vocabulary is there because it's precise and useful, not because I'm trying to impress you.

Whether you're a college student who wants to truly understand this material rather than just survive a final exam, a professional who suspects your communication habits are quietly holding you back, or a lifelong learner who simply finds human behavior fascinating — this course was designed with you in mind. Come in curious, bring your real questions, and by the time we get to your personal communication growth plan, I think you'll be surprised how much has already shifted.

I'll see you in the first lecture.
