Canadian Waters Seminar

"The fish aren't hiding — you just haven't learned to read the water yet. That's what we're here to fix."

Val (Valdas) Samonis

What you'll learn

What you'll be able to do

  • Read a midsized Canadian lake or river and identify where target species hold at different seasons and water temperatures
  • Rig and deploy the right tackle for walleye, pike, lake trout, and smallmouth bass in varied Canadian water conditions
  • Apply survivalist fishing techniques — bank fishing, improvised rigs, and minimal-gear methods — to put fish on the table without a fully equipped boat
  • Safely handle, dispatch, and streamside-clean a catch for immediate consumption or camp preservation
  • Navigate weather windows, water clarity, and seasonal patterns specific to the Canadian Shield and boreal waterway systems
  • Build and execute a personal fishing plan for any unfamiliar midsized Canadian waterbody using topo maps, satellite imagery, and on-site scouting

Who it's for

Is this you?

Backcountry campers

They want to supplement their pack food with a fresh catch and need a reliable, preferably boat-free system for fishing unfamiliar backcountry lakes.

Survivalists & preppers

They're building real wilderness food-sourcing skills and want the improvised rigs, passive setups, and field-processing techniques this seminar delivers.

Returning anglers

They fished decades ago and are getting back into it — this time on Canadian Shield waters — and want a structured, no-fluff refresher that actually explains the 'why'.

Cottage country explorers

They have access to midsized Canadian lakes but feel like they're always fishing blind — this seminar gives them the water-reading and species knowledge to fish those waters intelligently.

Outdoorswomen going solo

She's heading into the bush on her own terms and wants the self-reliance skills — catch, dispatch, clean, cook — to fish independently and confidently.

Trip planners & map readers

They love the planning side — topo maps, satellite imagery, scouting protocols — and want a rigorous framework for fishing any unfamiliar Canadian waterbody before they even leave home.

Val (Valdas) Samonis

I know why you're here. You've looked at a Canadian lake — maybe a Shield lake with black water and granite drop-offs, maybe a boreal river running high from snowmelt — and you've thought: there are fish in there, and I don't know how to find them. Or maybe you've been out there, made your best guesses, and gone home with an empty stringer. Either way, you're done guessing.

That's exactly what this seminar fixes!

An angler for over half a century, I built Canadian Waters Seminar for the angler who's serious about the backcountry — the person who wants to fish not just for the sport of it, but because putting food on the fire matters. Whether you're a weekend wilderness camper, a survivalist who needs reliable protein in the field, or just someone who's sick of fishing the same pressured lakes by the highway and wants to go somewhere real — the approach I teach works. It's the same systematic thinking I use every time I walk up to an unfamiliar piece of water: read the structure, match the species to the season, pick the right setup, and fish with a plan instead of a hope. :)

Here's what I want you to take away from this: the fish aren't randomly scattered across a lake. They're where the temperature, structure, and food tell them to be. Once you understand that — once you can look at a topo map, spot a thermocline transition, or read a current seam and know that walleye or pike or bass or lake trout are likely holding right there — fishing changes entirely. It becomes a skill set, not a lottery. That's what I'm handing you: a repeatable system you can apply to any midsized Canadian waterbody, season after season.

I won't pad this out with folklore or tackle-shop mythology. Every technique in this seminar — from improvised bank rigs to streamside filleting to making a go/no-go call on a Canadian Shield weather front — has been tested in the field. I respect your time enough to keep it tight, practical, and honest. If something doesn't work consistently on real water, it's not in here.

Come in ready to learn, ready to think, and ready to get wet. The water's waiting.
