What you'll learn

What you'll be able to do

  • Compare the major models of emotional intelligence — ability, trait, and mixed — and critically evaluate how each is measured and what the evidence actually supports.
  • Identify and differentiate your own emotions with greater precision (emotional granularity), and recognize patterns that interfere, such as suppression, rumination, and alexithymia.
  • Apply evidence-based emotion regulation strategies drawn from Gross's process model and clinical approaches including CBT, DBT, ACT, and mindfulness practice.
  • Distinguish cognitive empathy, affective empathy, and compassion, and deploy perspective-taking and active listening skills in real, high-stakes conversations.
  • Apply interpersonal effectiveness skills — assertiveness, boundary-setting, conflict navigation, and relational repair — across leadership, caregiving, and team contexts.
  • Design a personalized emotional and social intelligence development plan with measurable goals, and evaluate claims, programs, and assessments in the field with critical accuracy.

Who it's for

Is this you?

Mid-career leader

She manages a team and knows her technical skills are strong — but high-stakes conversations, conflict, and team dynamics are where she wants to grow with real rigor, not a retreat platitude.

Psychologically curious professional

He's read the popular EQ books and suspects there's more substance beneath them — he wants the actual science, the model comparisons, and the critical framework to evaluate what's real.

Educator or school counselor

She works with students' social-emotional development every day and wants her own practice grounded in affective science, not just curriculum buzzwords.

Caregiver or helping professional

He gives a lot of himself in care roles and needs evidence-based tools for empathy, compassion fatigue, and the relational repair that keeps those relationships sustainable.

Self-aware growth-seeker

She's done the therapy, journals regularly, and is ready to go deeper — she wants emotional granularity, regulation strategy, and a personalized plan, not another feelings wheel.

Skeptical practitioner

He's in HR, coaching, or organizational development and has grown wary of EQ hype — he needs a course that respects his skepticism, shows its evidence, and still delivers practical skill.

If you've spent any time in professional development circles, you've probably encountered a version of emotional intelligence that felt thin. A quiz that sorts you into a category. A seminar that promises transformational empathy in ninety minutes. A leadership framework built on a concept that, if you actually read the original research, is considerably more contested than the keynote speaker let on.

I understand why that's frustrating — and I also understand why people keep looking anyway. The underlying question is real: How do I understand myself and other people better, and what can I actually do about it? That question deserves a real answer, not a repackaged self-help formula.

That's what Applied EQ Lab is built to provide. We start with the science — not to make this academic for its own sake, but because the science is genuinely interesting and because it gives you a durable foundation. When you understand why emotional granularity matters (and what the research on it actually shows), you practice it differently than if someone just told you to "name your feelings." When you understand the difference between cognitive empathy and affective empathy, you stop conflating them and start using each one appropriately. Theory, here, is in service of skill.

What I care most about in this curriculum is intellectual honesty. Where the evidence is strong, I'll tell you. Where it's mixed, contested, or limited by measurement problems, I'll tell you that too — and I'll show you how to evaluate it yourself. You'll leave this course as a more critical consumer of the entire EI field, which means you'll be better protected from the noise and better equipped to spot the signal. That, to me, is one of the most practical things I can offer.

The skills themselves are drawn from the strongest scientific and clinical traditions available: affective neuroscience, appraisal theory, Gross's process model of emotion regulation, CBT, DBT, ACT, mindfulness research, attachment theory, and the interpersonal effectiveness literature. These aren't buzzwords — they're frameworks with decades of research behind them, and I'll walk you through what that research actually says.

By the end, you won't just know more about emotional intelligence. You'll have a personalized development plan, a set of regulation and relational skills you've begun practicing, and a clear-eyed sense of where your edges are and what deliberate work on them looks like. That's the transformation I can honestly promise you — and it's the one I think is worth making.
