If you are reading this, you already know the Arctic matters — and you are probably frustrated by how difficult it is to find analysis that holds the full picture in focus at once.

Climate scientists write compellingly about sea-ice dynamics but rarely engage the legal architecture that determines who controls the resources those dynamics are unlocking. International lawyers parse UNCLOS extended-shelf submissions with precision but often treat the underlying geophysics as a background fact rather than a live variable. Strategists debate Russian military posture and Chinese Polar Silk Road ambitions without always accounting for the economic break-even realities that constrain what states can actually do in the region. The result, across journals and policy shops alike, is a body of Arctic analysis that is often expert within its lane and underequipped outside it.

As a faculty of the University of the Arctic, I prepared this seminar because that fragmentation is a professional liability. If you are writing a dissertation chapter on Arctic governance, advising on polar resource investment, staffing a policy office that touches the High North, or building a research agenda that intersects climate and security, you cannot afford to hold the disciplines at arm's length from one another. The Arctic forces integration. A shipping-route decision implicates Canadian sovereignty claims, Russian port infrastructure investment, IMO heavy-fuel-oil regulation, and black carbon deposition on sea ice — simultaneously. The seminar is designed to build the connective tissue between those domains.

What I ask of you is the same standard I hold myself to: name your framework, source your claims, and take the strongest counter-argument seriously before you dismiss it. Reasoned disagreement is not only welcome here — it is the mechanism by which the seminar actually works. If your reading of the Central Arctic Ocean fisheries agreement or China's near-Arctic state doctrine differs from the framing I offer, make the case. Bring the evidence. That is the seminar-room norm, and it applies in both directions.

The curriculum moves from physical foundations through legal architecture, resource economics, shipping-route analysis, and strategic posture before arriving at the policy synthesis unit — where you will construct and defend an integrated argument on a live Arctic issue. That sequence is deliberate. The capstone is only as rigorous as the disciplinary foundation underneath it, and the foundation only becomes usable when you can apply it under the pressure of a real analytical task.
