Lumka Stuurman

If you're reading this, there's a good chance you've already built something worth protecting. A business, a property portfolio, investments — maybe all three. And somewhere along the way, someone told you that you should probably look at a Trust. So you set one up, or you're thinking about it, and now you're sitting with a document you half-understand, administered by people you mostly trust, doing a job you can't quite verify.

That's not good enough. Not for what you've built. Not for what you're trying to leave behind.

I created The Wealth Architect because I kept seeing the same pattern: intelligent, capable people making significant financial decisions — about structures, transfers, loans, estate plans — without a clear enough understanding of what they were actually doing or why. Not because they weren't smart enough. Because nobody had taken the time to explain it properly. The law doesn't have to be impenetrable. The structures aren't as complicated as they're often made to seem. What's missing is usually a clear, honest guide who will sit across from you, cut through the noise and explain exactly how this works — and what happens when it doesn't.

This programme does that. It covers South African Trusts from first principles: what they are, how they're structured, the different types and when each is appropriate, and — critically — how to read the Trust Deed that governs everything. From there, we move into the architecture of how Trusts and Companies work together, because a Trust in isolation is often not enough. You'll understand the role of Holding Companies, Operating Companies and layered structures, and you'll see how the pieces fit together into something coherent and durable. We go into the tax implications without flinching — Section 7C, CGT, estate duty, donations tax — because you cannot plan intelligently around rules you don't understand. And we deal honestly with the limits of these structures, including what a Trust can and cannot do when a marriage breaks down.

I also want to be direct about something: this programme is not a substitute for professional legal and tax advice tailored to your specific circumstances. What it does is give you the foundation to have those conversations at a much higher level — to know what questions to ask, what red flags to look for, and what a well-constructed structure should actually look like. The goal is not to turn you into an attorney. The goal is to make sure that when the attorneys, accountants and financial planners are in the room, you are not the least informed person at the table.

If you're serious about protecting what you've built and building something that lasts beyond you, I'd like to show you how. The structures exist. The law supports them. What you need now is the knowledge to use them correctly.
