A note from your teacher
Leigh Baumann
I want to ask you something before we go any further: Do you remember a coach who made you feel like you could do anything? Or maybe one who made you feel like you were always one mistake away from the bench?
Most of us got into youth coaching because we wanted to be the first kind. But nobody hands you a manual. You get a gym, a group of kids, a bag of basketballs, and a whistle — and suddenly you're responsible for their safety, their development, their love of the game, and somehow also the scoreboard. That's a lot. And if you've ever stood at halfcourt wondering what to do next, I want you to know: that feeling doesn't mean you're doing it wrong. It means you care enough to notice the gap between where you are and where you want to be.
That gap is exactly what this course is built to close. I designed Put Me in Coach because the resources available to youth coaches have always been scattered — drills here, safety guidelines there, a PDF on parent communication you'll never read. What I wanted to create was one complete, honest, practical certification that covers everything from running a preschool practice to managing a high school roster, from praising the kid who finally made a layup to knowing what to do if someone collapses on the court. Every topic in this course exists because a real coach in a real gym has faced it.
I also want to be direct with you about something: coaching kids well is about more than basketball. It's about creating an environment where a kid with ADHD doesn't feel like a problem to be managed. Where the kid who's still growing into their body doesn't get quietly left out of drills. Where the parent on the bleachers feels like a partner, not an adversary. The technical basketball material in this course is strong — we go deep on the skills and drills that actually move the needle — but the human side of coaching is treated with just as much rigor.
You don't need to have played at a high level. You don't need a coaching résumé. You need the willingness to show up for your players consistently, and the knowledge to make that showing-up count. That's what I'm here to give you.
Whether you're coaching three-year-olds who think defense means hugging the ball, or high school athletes with college aspirations on their minds — this certification is your playbook. Let's get to work.
