Defining the Text: Delimitation and Structural Analysis
Trains students to establish the precise boundaries of a passage and map its internal architecture before any interpretation begins. Poorly delimited passages produce distorted conclusions; structural blindness causes readers to miss the argument a text is making. Context Is Everything: Historical, Cultural, and Canonical Setting
Develops the student's ability to reconstruct the world in which a text was produced and received. Meaning is anchored in historical particularity: knowing who wrote, to whom, when, under what circumstances, and within what canonical framework dramatically constrains and illuminates interpretation. This module establishes the critical distinction between the world behind the text, the world within the text, and the world in front of the text, and teaches students to use each responsibly.

Inside the Text: Language, Grammar, and Translation
Moves the student inside the linguistic fabric of the passage itself. This module builds on the toolkit introduced in Module 1 and the structural and contextual grounding of Modules 2–3 to train careful analysis of significant vocabulary, grammatical and syntactical features, and the interpretive decisions embedded in English translations. Students without Greek or Hebrew training learn to use original-language reference tools responsibly, while avoiding the well-documented pitfalls of amateur word studies.

The placement of this module after the student's own analysis is deliberate: scholars should inform and challenge, not replace, the student's independent work.

From Text to Argument: Writing and Presenting Your Exegesis
Brings every skill developed in the course to culmination in a complete, written exegetical argument. Students learn to synthesize their textual, historical, linguistic, and scholarly analysis into a coherent interpretive case, make the carefully bounded move from exegetical conclusion to theological reflection, and produce a polished exegetical paper that demonstrates the full method. A final integration activity revisits the first-pass exegetical sketch from Module 1 to make the student's growth across the course visible and concrete.

If you have spent years reading the Bible earnestly and still feel, at the end of a careful study session, that the text is holding something back — that there are depths of meaning you are circling but cannot quite reach — I want you to know that feeling is not a sign of inadequacy. It is a sign that you are ready for something more.
The tools exist to get you there. Scholars have spent centuries developing a rigorous, repeatable process for interpreting Scripture with precision — for asking the right questions of a text in the right order, for reconstructing the world in which it was written, for hearing the grammar and syntax as the original audience would have heard it, and for building an argument about meaning that can withstand honest scrutiny. That process is learnable. It is not the exclusive property of people who spent three years in a residential seminary. And teaching it to serious, motivated students outside those institutional walls is exactly what this school is for.
In Biblical Exegesis Step by Step, I will walk you through every stage of the exegetical method, from the first question — where does this passage actually begin and end, and why? — to the last: how do I write a theological conclusion that my own exegesis honestly supports? We will work through how to map literary structure, how to use a lexicon without abusing it, how to compare translations as interpretive documents rather than transparent windows, and how to read a commentary critically rather than deferentially. Nothing is assumed except your willingness to do careful work.
I want to be honest with you about what this course is and is not. It is not a survey of biblical content, and it is not a shortcut to confident-sounding opinions about Scripture. It is a course in method — in the habits of mind and the concrete procedures that make responsible interpretation possible. That means it will ask you to slow down, to sit with uncertainty, and to let the evidence lead. In my experience, students who make that commitment find that the payoff — in depth of understanding, in confidence of interpretation, in the quality of their own theological thinking — is well worth the discipline.
