The curriculum

What's inside your school

6 modules · 23 lessons

1

Whole Numbers & the Bar Model Foundation

Students build place-value fluency up to 10 million, then learn the part-whole and comparison bar model as a universal problem-solving tool. All later modules rely on bar-model literacy established here, so multi-step word problems anchor the unit before fractions and decimals are introduced.

  • 1.1Place Value to 10 MillionIncluded
  • 1.2The Part-Whole & Comparison Bar ModelIncluded
  • 1.3Multi-Step Word Problems with Whole NumbersIncluded
2

Fractions — Meaning, Multiplication & Division

Students extend fraction understanding from Grade 4 by operating on fractions and mixed numbers with full conceptual grounding before moving to procedures. The module opens with equivalence and mixed-number fluency (prerequisite to multiplying and dividing), moves through the operations in logical order, and closes by connecting fraction operations back to the bar model.

  • 2.1Equivalent Fractions & Mixed NumbersIncluded
  • 2.2Multiplying Fractions & Mixed NumbersIncluded
  • 2.3Dividing Fractions & Mixed NumbersIncluded
  • 2.4Fraction Word Problems with Bar ModelsIncluded
3

Decimals — Understanding, Operations & Connections

Students extend place value to the thousandths, master all four decimal operations, and explicitly connect decimals to fractions. The module is sequenced concept-first (meaning and place value) → additive operations → multiplicative operations → integration with fractions and bar models, ensuring each lesson builds on the last.

  • 3.1Decimals to the ThousandthsIncluded
  • 3.2Adding & Subtracting DecimalsIncluded
  • 3.3Multiplying & Dividing DecimalsIncluded
  • 3.4Decimals & Fractions in Bar Model ProblemsIncluded
4

Geometry — Triangles, Quadrilaterals & Their Properties

Students classify triangles and quadrilaterals by side lengths, angle sizes, and relational properties, and use those properties to find unknown angles. A prerequisite lesson on angle types and the triangle/quadrilateral angle-sum rules opens the module, ensuring students have the tools they need for angle calculations before Area and Volume (Module 5) is introduced.

  • 4.1Angles — Types, Measurement & Angle-Sum RulesIncluded
  • 4.2Triangles — Classification & Angle PropertiesIncluded
  • 4.3Quadrilaterals — Properties & RelationshipsIncluded
  • 4.4Finding Unknown Angles in Geometric FiguresIncluded
5

Area, Volume & Composite Figures

Students calculate areas of triangles and composite 2-D figures, then extend spatial reasoning to volume of rectangular prisms and composite 3-D figures using formulas. The module is sequenced 2-D before 3-D, and unit conversion is addressed at the start to prevent errors in later formula work. Geometry properties from Module 4 are applied directly when decomposing composite figures.

  • 5.1Area Review & Unit ConversionIncluded
  • 5.2Area of Triangles & Composite 2-D FiguresIncluded
  • 5.3Volume of Rectangular PrismsIncluded
  • 5.4Volume of Composite 3-D FiguresIncluded
6

Data Analysis, Ratios & Integrated Problem Solving

Students interpret and construct tables and line graphs, develop ratio concepts and ratio tables, and solve integrated multi-step problems that draw on all prior modules. Ratio is introduced before the integration lesson so students have a full toolkit — including the ratio bar model — for the final mastery challenges.

  • 6.1Tables & Line GraphsIncluded
  • 6.2Ratios & Ratio TablesIncluded
  • 6.3Bar Models for Ratio & Fraction ProblemsIncluded
  • 6.4Integrated Mastery ChallengeIncluded

Who it's for

Is this you?

The Grade 5 student

Ready to move beyond memorized steps and actually understand why math works the way it does.

The homeschool parent

Building a rigorous, year-long math curriculum at home and wants lessons clear enough to teach from — no math degree required.

The struggling learner

Has been told they're 'not a math person' — and needs a visual, conceptual approach that finally makes the numbers click.

The advanced 4th grader

Cruising through Grade 4 work and ready for the depth, challenge, and reasoning of a true Grade 5 Singapore curriculum.

The involved classroom parent

Wants to understand exactly what their child is learning so they can offer real help with homework — not just check answers.

The gap-filling tutor

Working with students who have shaky fraction or decimal foundations and need a structured, concept-first way to rebuild them.

If you've ever watched a child stare at a word problem and just… freeze — pencil hovering, eyes going blank — you already know the problem with how math is usually taught. We give kids steps to follow, rules to memorize, and tricks to recall under pressure. And for a while, it works. Until it doesn't. Until the problems get a little more complex, the numbers get a little messier, and there's no trick left to fall back on.

That's exactly why I built Singapore Math 5 the way I did. This course isn't about teaching your child more procedures. It's about giving them a way of seeing math — understanding what a fraction actually means when you divide by it, visualizing why the area formula for a triangle is half of what it is for a rectangle, and drawing a simple bar diagram that turns a tangled ratio problem into something obvious. When math makes sense at that level, students don't freeze. They think.

We work through six units together: whole numbers and the bar model foundation, fractions, decimals, geometry and properties, area and volume, and finally data analysis with ratios. Every unit is built the same way — we start with the concept, we build the picture, we work through it step by step in plain language, and then we use it to solve real problems. I'll ask "why does this work?" a lot. That's on purpose. The answer to that question is where the real learning lives.

I also want to be honest with you about who this course is for. It's for kids who are ready to think — not necessarily kids who already find math easy. Some of my favorite students are the ones who've been told they're "not math people." What they usually mean is they've never been shown math in a way that made sense to them. This course is that chance.

Whether you're a parent sitting alongside your child at the kitchen table, a homeschool teacher building your own curriculum, or a student who wants to genuinely understand what everyone else seems to be just memorizing — you belong here. Let's build something solid together.
