A Coach's Guide to the Athlete's Brain: Ages 11–25

Every coach has had that athlete: talented, hardworking, but somehow unable to stay composed under pressure, adapt when a play breaks down, or shake off a bad call. The problem isn't effort or attitude — it's brain development. And once you understand it, everything changes.

This course is built around one powerful idea: the developing brain between ages 11 and 25 is a work in progress, and the way you coach right now either builds or bypasses the executive skills that determine an athlete's ceiling. Drawing on decades of neuropsychology research translated into locker-room language, you'll learn to identify, target, and strengthen the 10 Executive Skills — from Response Inhibition to Flexibility — that govern decision-making, emotional regulation, focus, and adaptability on and off the field.

You won't find abstract theory here. Every concept comes paired with real practice scenarios, coaching cues you can use tomorrow, and drills designed to train the brain as deliberately as you train the body. Whether you coach youth rec leagues, high school varsity, or college programs, this course gives you a repeatable framework for understanding why athletes behave the way they do — and a practical toolkit for meeting them where their brain actually is.

By the end of this course, you'll coach with a completely new lens. You'll design practices that build mental skills alongside physical ones, hold more effective individual athlete conversations, and create team environments where the developing brain can thrive — producing athletes who are not just faster and stronger, but smarter, steadier, and more resilient when it counts most.

What you'll be able to do

  • Explain the neuroscience of brain development between ages 11–25 in plain language you can apply on day one of practice
  • Identify each of the 10 Executive Skills and recognize how strengths or deficits in each show up in athlete behavior
  • Use Response Inhibition coaching strategies to reduce impulsive penalties, reactive outbursts, and poor split-second decisions
  • Apply Working Memory techniques to help athletes absorb, retain, and execute complex game plans and in-game adjustments
  • Implement Emotional Control frameworks that build composure under pressure and accelerate recovery from mistakes
  • Deploy Flexibility coaching tools to develop athletes who adapt quickly when game plans change, opponents adjust, or adversity strikes
  • Design practices and team environments that intentionally strengthen executive skills alongside physical training
  • Hold individual athlete conversations that are developmentally informed, strengths-based, and actually effective

I've spent years sitting in dugouts, standing on sidelines, and watching incredibly dedicated coaches unknowingly work against the brains of the very athletes they were trying to develop. Not because they didn't care — they cared deeply — but because nobody had ever handed them a map of what's actually happening inside a 14-year-old's head when the game is on the line. That gap is exactly why I built this course. I've combined research in neuropsychology and executive function with real-world coaching experience to create something that is equal parts science and craft. My goal is simple: give you the framework I wish every coach had from day one. When you understand the athlete's brain, you don't just become a better coach — you become the coach your athletes actually needed.
