Start Here: Your Confident Readers Journey

This orientation module welcomes parents to Confident Readers Academy and gives them everything they need before diving into the content. Parents will meet the founder, understand how to navigate the school, get a plain-language introduction to the Science of Reading, learn how to identify where their child needs the most support, and build their personalized starting point. A Parent Reading Confidence Scorecard and a simple daily routine framework are included here so parents feel grounded, confident, and ready from Day 1.

Reading Foundations for Parents

Before diving into strategies, parents need a solid understanding of how reading actually works — and why it sometimes breaks down. This foundational module explains the reading process in plain language, addresses common myths, clarifies why some children struggle, and helps parents see why decoding is more powerful than memorization. Parents also learn what a sustainable daily practice looks like, setting up everything that follows.

  • 2.1How Children Learn to ReadIncluded
  • 2.2Why Some Children Struggle with ReadingIncluded
  • 2.3Decoding vs. Memorizing: What Your Child Really NeedsIncluded
  • 2.4What to Practice Daily and How to Make It Feel EasyIncluded
3

Phonemic Awareness Made Simple

Phonemic awareness — the ability to hear, identify, and manipulate individual sounds in spoken words — is one of the strongest predictors of reading success, and it is developed entirely through the ear, not the eye. This module walks parents through each level of phonemic awareness in the correct developmental sequence, from the easiest (rhyming) to the most advanced (deletion and substitution). Every lesson is filled with oral, playful activities that require zero worksheets.

  • 3.1Rhyming and Beginning SoundsIncluded
  • 3.2Blending Sounds into WordsIncluded
  • 3.3Segmenting Sounds in WordsIncluded
  • 3.4Deleting and Substituting SoundsIncluded
  • 3.5Phonemic Awareness Without WorksheetsIncluded
4

Phonics, Decoding, and Sight Words

This is the largest and most skill-dense module in the curriculum, and it follows phonemic awareness because children must be able to hear sounds before they can map them to letters. Parents work through the explicit, systematic phonics sequence recommended by the Science of Reading — from single letter sounds all the way to multisyllabic words. A dedicated lesson on sight words and high-frequency words is included here (moved from a separate course in the original draft) to show parents how decoding and sight word knowledge work together, not against each other.

  • 4.1Letter Sounds, Short Vowels, and CVC WordsIncluded
  • 4.2Blends and DigraphsIncluded
  • 4.3Long Vowels and Vowel PatternsIncluded
  • 4.4Word Families and Onset-RimeIncluded
  • 4.5Multisyllabic Words and Decoding StrategiesIncluded
  • 4.6Sight Words, High-Frequency Words, and Heart WordsIncluded
5

Building Reading Fluency

Fluency is the bridge between decoding and comprehension. A child who reads accurately but slowly and robotically is spending so much mental energy on decoding that little is left for understanding. This module helps parents understand what fluency really is (accuracy + rate + expression + prosody), how to build it without pressure or timed drills that cause anxiety, and how to track genuine progress over time. All five of the original fluency topics are preserved and expanded.

  • 5.1What Fluency Is and Why It MattersIncluded
  • 5.2Repeated Reading and Echo ReadingIncluded
  • 5.3Partner Reading, Phrase Reading, and ExpressionIncluded
  • 5.4Timed Reading Without Pressure and Fluency GamesIncluded
6

Vocabulary and Reading Comprehension

Vocabulary and comprehension are the meaning-making side of reading. A child can decode every word on a page and still not understand what they read — and often this is because they do not know what the words mean or have not been taught how to think actively while reading. This module is expanded from the original draft, which combined both skills in just four lessons. Vocabulary now has its own dedicated lesson, and comprehension is spread across multiple lessons to honor the depth of these skills. The module aligns directly with the Simple View of Reading: language comprehension is just as important as decoding.

  • 6.1Building Vocabulary Every DayIncluded
  • 6.2Asking Questions Before, During, and After ReadingIncluded
  • 6.3Retelling, Main Idea, and SequencingIncluded
  • 6.4Character, Setting, Problem, and SolutionIncluded
  • 6.5Making Predictions and Using Text EvidenceIncluded
7

Grade-Level Reading Support

This final module gives parents exactly what they came for: specific, grade-matched strategies for their Kindergarten, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, or 4th grader. Each grade-level lesson identifies the skills children should be mastering at that stage, the warning signs that suggest a gap, and 2–4 targeted at-home activities tailored to that grade. Parents are encouraged to visit only the lesson(s) relevant to their child's grade — though cross-grade review is always available. This module directly fulfills the original course structure's grade-level vision.

  • 7.1Kindergarten Reading ReadinessIncluded
  • 7.21st Grade Reading ConfidenceIncluded
  • 7.32nd Grade Reading ConfidenceIncluded
  • 7.43rd Grade Reading MasteryIncluded
  • 7.54th Grade Reading SuccessIncluded

Who it's for

Is this you?

The Worried Kindergarten Parent

Your child is just starting school and already falling behind in letter sounds — this school gives you a calm, clear starting point so you catch it early.

The 2nd-Grade Decoder

Your child still guesses at words instead of sounding them out — the phonics and decoding module teaches you exactly how to break that habit for good.

The Frustrated 3rd-Grade Parent

Your child reads slowly, stumbles on longer words, and avoids it at all costs — the fluency and grade-level modules give you a measurable, low-pressure path forward.

The Advocate Parent

You want to understand why your child struggles so you can talk to their teacher with confidence — the Science of Reading module gives you that language and knowledge.

The Busy Working Parent

You only have 15–20 minutes in the evening — the daily reading routine module is built specifically around your real life, not an idealized one.

The 4th-Grade Comprehension Struggle

Your child can decode words but doesn't understand what they read — the vocabulary and comprehension module teaches you simple, conversation-based strategies that actually stick.

A note from your teacher

I see you.

You've sat next to your child while they stared at a word — a simple word — and watched them shut down. You've Googled "how to help my struggling reader" at 10pm and ended up more confused than when you started. You've wondered whether you're doing enough, whether you're doing it right, whether this is just a phase or something that needs more attention.

I spent years in the classroom watching this same thing happen from the other side — a child who was bright and curious but couldn't crack the reading code, and a parent who desperately wanted to help but didn't know how. And I kept thinking: parents shouldn't have to feel this lost. The research on how kids learn to read is clear. The strategies work. They just weren't written for the people who needed them most — the ones sitting at the kitchen table every night.

So I built Confident Readers Academy for you. Not a collection of worksheets. Not a list of tips. A real, sequenced system — starting with a simple scorecard that tells you exactly which reading skill your child needs most right now — and then walking you through phonemic awareness, phonics, decoding, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension in plain language, one step at a time. Every lesson ends with a specific, doable activity you can try that same evening. No prep. No guessing. Just a clear next step.

Here's what I want you to know: you don't need a teaching degree to do this. You need the right information, in the right order, explained by someone who trusts you to handle it. Every module in this school is written the way I'd explain it to a friend over coffee — warm, direct, and practical. And the grade-level module means you're never practicing the wrong things; what you work on with your 1st grader looks completely different from what you'd do with your 3rd grader, and this school knows that.

The transformation I want for your family isn't just a child who reads better — it's a child who feels like a reader. Who picks up a book without dreading it. Who sounds out a hard word, gets it right, and looks up at you with that glow. And it's you, sitting beside them, knowing exactly what you're doing and why it's working.

You're not too late. You don't need more qualifications. You just need a place to start — and that's the very first thing we'll do together. I'm so glad you're here.
