Grow the whole child — from the inside out
CourAgeOUS is a K-12 whole-child curriculum built on 5 pillars — Courage, Arts, Home Sense, Humanity, and Healthiness — that develops unique strengths, real-world skills, and the mindset kids need to thrive in a rapidly changing world. Every lesson opens with intention and closes with kindness, making school a place where students grow from the inside out.

"Every lesson we teach is a message to a student about what we think they're worth — so we make sure every lesson says: you are capable, you are needed, and you belong here."— Shannon Johnson

Hooked on Courage — The CourAgeOUS Mindset
The foundational pillar of the entire CourAgeOUS curriculum. Every class across all five pillars opens with a famous quote on the board and six Innercise breaths to calm the mind and anchor focus. This module builds those rituals into a full mindset course — teaching students to identify their unique strengths (OUS), develop resilience, and grow the courage to express themselves publicly. Ventriloquism and the daily Edification ritual live here as well, seeding a culture of joyful communication and genuine peer encouragement that carries into every other pillar.
- 1.1The Courage Ritual — Quotes, Breath, and IntentionIncluded
- 1.2Optimizing Unique Strengths — Discovering Your OUSIncluded
- 1.3Resilience and the Courage to Fail ForwardIncluded
- 1.4Ventriloquism, Voice, and Public CourageIncluded
- 1.5The Edification Ritual — Building a Culture of Genuine EncouragementIncluded
Hooked on Harmony — Arts and Music at Any Age
The 'A' in CourAgeOUS — Arts at Any Age. This pillar affirms that creative expression is a lifelong human need, not a childhood extracurricular. Lessons are intentionally grade-banded: K-6 builds foundational musical and visual literacy through play and story; grades 7-12 expand into production, composition, and community-scale creation. Emotional intelligence, cultural appreciation, and the courage to create imperfectly thread through every lesson. The Innercise breath and quote ritual opens each class; ventriloquism play and Edification close it.
- 2.1Creative Courage — Finding Your Artistic VoiceIncluded
- 2.2Music as Medicine — Rhythm, Melody, and the Brain (K-6 Focus)Included
- 2.3Visual Art and Storytelling — Line, Color, and Meaning (K-6 Focus)Included
- 2.4Music Production, Songwriting, and Performance Foundations (Grades 7-12)Included
- 2.5Mixed Media, Community Art, and the Courage to Create TogetherIncluded
Hooked on Home$ense — Life Skills for Independent Living
The practical backbone of the CourAgeOUS curriculum. Home$ense ensures that every student — regardless of what career they pursue — graduates knowing how to feed themselves well, manage money, run a household, and navigate the consumer marketplace. Lessons spiral in complexity from basic safety and nutrition through budgeting, home systems, and critical consumer literacy. Cross-pillar connections are strong: Kitchen Courage reinforces Healthiness content; Budget Like a Boss previews accounting concepts in the Humanity business track; Consumer Smarts links to the marketing and business law lessons in Humanity.
- 3.1Kitchen Courage — Nutrition Basics and Safe Food PreparationIncluded
- 3.2Budget Like a Boss — Personal Finance and Smart SpendingIncluded
- 3.3Home Management 101 — Cleaning, Organizing, and Household SystemsIncluded
- 3.4Sewing, Mending, and the Art of Making Things LastIncluded
- 3.5Consumer Smarts — Advertising, Rights, and Responsible ChoicesIncluded
Hooked on Humanity — Civics, Language, AI, and Business by Grade Band
The most structurally complex pillar of the CourAgeOUS curriculum because it evolves across four distinct grade bands rather than running as a single track. K-2 builds global curiosity through foreign language and culture. Grades 3-6 develop civic identity and community responsibility. Grades 7-8 prepare students for a world reshaped by artificial intelligence and digital ethics. Grades 9-12 equip students with serious entrepreneurial and business skills — accounting, marketing, and business law — because Humanity is changing and teens who understand business and technology will be ahead. All lessons open with a quote ritual and Innercise breaths and close with Edification.
- 4.1Hello, World! — Introduction to Foreign Language and Global Culture (K-2)Included
- 4.2We the Students — Civics, Rights, and Community Responsibility (Grades 3-6)Included
- 4.3AI and Me — Understanding Artificial Intelligence and Digital Ethics (Grades 7-8)Included
- 4.4Business Foundations — Entrepreneurship, Accounting, and How Money Moves (Grades 9-12)Included
- 4.5Marketing That Matters — Brand Building and Ethical Persuasion (Grades 9-12)Included
- 4.6Business Law Basics — Contracts, Rights, and Playing by the Rules (Grades 9-12)Included
Hooked on Healthiness — What Goes In, What Comes Out
The fifth and final pillar of the CourAgeOUS curriculum grounds all of the mental, creative, civic, and entrepreneurial development of the other four pillars in the body. Students learn that optimal thinking, emotional regulation, courage, creativity, and decision-making are all downstream of what they put into their bodies. Lessons progress from the molecular (macronutrients) to the systemic (gut-brain connection) to the behavioral (sleep, hydration, movement) to the environmental (food industry and empowered consumer choices). Cross-pillar callbacks — to the Innercise breath in Courage, to kitchen skills in Home$ense, and to consumer awareness in both Home$ense and Humanity — make this pillar the integrating capstone for the whole curriculum.
- 5.1You Are What You Eat — Understanding Macronutrients and MicronutrientsIncluded
- 5.2Food and Your Brain — The Gut-Brain ConnectionIncluded
- 5.3Hydration, Sleep, and Movement — The Three Pillars of Physical VitalityIncluded
- 5.4Reading the System — Food Industry, Marketing, and Making Empowered ChoicesIncluded

Shannon Johnson
If you've ever sat across from a student — or your own child — who knows how to pass a test but has no idea how to boil an egg, balance a budget, take a deep breath when everything feels like too much, or say something genuinely kind to a classmate… then you already understand exactly why CourAgeOUS exists.
We built this curriculum because we believe school should prepare young people for their whole life — not just the academic parts. The world our students are inheriting is moving fast. AI is reshaping work. Financial literacy is no longer optional. Mental and physical health are in crisis. And yet most school days still begin without a single moment of intention, and end without a single word of genuine encouragement. We wanted to change that, starting with the very first breath of the school day.
CourAgeOUS is built around five pillars that work together the way a person actually works — Courage as the foundation, Arts as the voice, Home Sense as the hands, Humanity as the horizon, and Healthiness as the engine. Every lesson is designed to feel personally meaningful and immediately useful. A kindergartner learning to say "hello" in another language is building empathy. A seventh-grader understanding how AI makes decisions is building agency. A tenth-grader learning to read a contract is building freedom. These aren't extras. They're essentials.
I know the most common concern: "Is this rigorous enough? Will it complement our existing academics?" The answer is yes — and then some. CourAgeOUS doesn't replace your core curriculum. It gives it a spine. It gives students a reason to show up. The daily Courage Ritual creates focused, regulated learners before the first academic lesson begins. The Edification Ritual closes each day by naming something real and good in another person — and that practice alone changes classroom culture in ways that lesson plans alone never can.
Whether you're a homeschool parent building your family's entire school year around something you actually believe in, a private school administrator looking to create a distinctive, values-rich school identity, or a curriculum director ready to offer something that prepares students for 2035 and not 1985 — I want to invite you in. CourAgeOUS is warm, rigorous, practical, and alive. Come grow with us.
