Study spiritual evil the way Scripture demands — seriously

If you have picked up this page, I suspect you already know the frustration I'm describing.

You have seen the sensationalist end of this conversation — the breathless accounts of demonic encounters, the elaborate angelologies and hierarchies of hell with no real scriptural tether, the spiritual warfare books that read more like spiritual thriller novels than theology. And you have probably also felt the opposite pressure: the quiet embarrassment some circles feel about the topic, the tendency to explain away texts that don't fit neatly, the unspoken agreement not to take the demonic too seriously lest we seem credulous or unscientific. Neither of these is faithful. Neither actually serves the people in our pews, our classrooms, or our own souls.

What I have tried to build here is something different — a course that handles this subject the way any serious theological topic deserves to be handled. We go to the text first, carefully and repeatedly. We read the Old Testament passages that introduce spiritual evil, the Synoptic accounts of Jesus' exorcisms, Paul's language of principalities and powers, the visions of the Apocalypse — and we work to understand what each of these is actually saying, in its literary context, within the whole of Scripture. We do not import meaning from tradition before we have listened to the text. And when tradition does speak — and it speaks richly, from Origen and Augustine through Luther and Calvin to C. S. Lewis and contemporary evangelical scholarship — we engage it with genuine respect and genuine critical discernment.

I want to be honest with you about what this course is not. It is not a collection of dramatic anecdotes. It is not a deliverance ministry training program. It does not promise to resolve every interpretive dispute in Christian demonology, because some of those disputes are genuine and the intellectually honest response is to say so. What it does promise is a rigorous framework — one that takes the biblical witness seriously, traces the development of Christian thought responsibly, and never loses sight of the theological center that makes the whole subject bearable and even hopeful: the lordship of Jesus Christ over every power, seen and unseen.

That last point matters to me more than any other. Christian demonology, rightly understood, is not a study in fear. It is a study in the scope of Christ's victory. The Cross, the Resurrection, the Ascension — these are not epilogues to the story of spiritual evil. They are its decisive turning point. If you walk away from this course with greater theological precision and greater confidence in the reign of Christ, I will consider it a success.
