What It Means to Follow Jesus

This foundational module establishes the theological and personal basis of discipleship. Students explore what it truly means to follow Jesus — not as a religious program but as a whole-life apprenticeship — and examine the biblical portrait of a disciple before any practices or skills are introduced. This module is intentionally placed first because all subsequent modules build on a clear understanding of identity and calling.

  • 1.1The Anatomy of a DiscipleIncluded
  • 1.2The Call and the CostIncluded
  • 1.3Jesus as the Master DisciplerIncluded
  • 1.4Counting the Cost of True Conversion — Prerequisites to GrowthIncluded
2

The Daily Rhythm — Devotional Life and Prayer

This module equips students with practical, theologically grounded spiritual disciplines that form the backbone of a sustainable devotional life. It is placed second because identity (Module 1) must precede practice — students need to know who they are before they build habits around that identity. The module moves from principle to practice, ensuring students leave with a functioning daily rhythm they have already tested, not merely studied.

  • 2.1Why Consistency Beats IntensityIncluded
  • 2.2Engaging Scripture as Formation, Not InformationIncluded
  • 2.3A Disciple's Prayer LifeIncluded
  • 2.4Solitude, Sabbath, and the Fasted LifeIncluded
3

Character — Becoming Who You Follow

This module addresses the interior transformation that discipleship is ultimately aimed at — not behavior modification but character formation. It is placed third, after students have established a devotional rhythm, because sustained spiritual practice creates the conditions in which character work can take root. The module examines the specific character qualities that mark a mature disciple, grounding each in Scripture and tested through honest self-examination.

  • 3.1Humility — The Foundation of All VirtueIncluded
  • 3.2Integrity — Living Without a GapIncluded
  • 3.3Servanthood — Power Turned Upside DownIncluded
  • 3.4Surrender and Spiritual TransformationIncluded
4

Making Disciples — The One-on-One Relationship

This module equips students to move from being discipled to discipling others. It is placed fourth — after identity, practices, and character — because you cannot reproducibly give what you have not first received. Students learn the theology of multiplication, develop practical relational skills for one-on-one discipleship, and actually design a discipleship journey for a real person in their life. A bridging lesson on recognizing spiritual readiness in others has been added to ensure students can identify who is ready to be discipled before investing deeply.

  • 4.1The Biblical Mandate to MultiplyIncluded
  • 4.2Recognizing Spiritual Readiness — Who to Disciple and WhenIncluded
  • 4.3The Discipleship Conversation — Framework and SkillsIncluded
  • 4.4Designing a Discipleship Journey for Someone ElseIncluded
5

Community, Accountability, and Shared Mission

This module situates the individual disciple within the essential context of Christian community, making the case that discipleship is inherently communal — it cannot be fully lived out in isolation. It is placed fifth because students now have personal practices, character formation, and relational discipleship skills that need a community context to be sustained and multiplied. The module covers the theology and practice of community, accountability, mentorship, and shared outward mission.

  • 5.1The Theology of Christian CommunityIncluded
  • 5.2Accountability That Actually WorksIncluded
  • 5.3Mentorship — Finding One and Being OneIncluded
  • 5.4Shared Mission — Discipleship That SendsIncluded
6

A Rule of Life — Integrating Faith Into Everything

This culminating module draws together every thread of the course — identity, practices, character, relational discipleship, and community — into a personalized, integrated framework for lifelong faithfulness: a Rule of Life. It is placed last because students need the full body of the course to draw on when designing something comprehensive enough to be genuinely integrative. The module ensures students leave not with a completed course but with a living document they will carry forward.

  • 6.1What Is a Rule of Life?Included
  • 6.2Designing Your Rule Across Every DomainIncluded
  • 6.3Living, Reviewing, and Revising Your RuleIncluded

Maybe you've been sitting in church for years — faithful, sincere, genuinely in love with God — and yet you carry this quiet, nagging sense that there must be more. More than attending. More than knowing the right answers. More than doing good things for good people. You've felt the hunger but haven't quite had a map for it. I want you to know: that hunger is holy. And it's exactly what this school was built to feed.

I didn't create The Discipleship School because I had it all figured out. I created it because I walked through that same restlessness — the gap between Sunday faith and Monday life — and I know how disorienting it can feel when no one around you seems to name it. What I found, slowly and imperfectly, was that the ancient path of Christian discipleship had been there all along. Jesus didn't invite people to church. He invited them to follow — to walk with him, be shaped by him, and eventually bring others along. That's the path this school tries to recover.

Every module here is built around a conviction I hold deeply: that formation happens slowly, relationally, and in the ordinary. We begin with the foundations — what it actually costs to follow Jesus, and why that cost is worth counting honestly. We move into the rhythms of daily life: how to engage Scripture not just to learn facts but to be changed, how to pray with depth rather than duty, and why solitude and rest are not laziness but essential disciplines. Then we go inward — into the character work that most of us quietly avoid — humility, integrity, servanthood, surrender. These aren't add-ons. They're the soil.

And then — because discipleship was never meant to stop with you — we equip you to bring someone else along. We cover how to recognize who might be ready, how to have real discipleship conversations, and how to design a meaningful journey for another person. We look at what Christian community is really for, how accountability can be life-giving rather than shame-inducing, and how shared mission sends us back out into the world with purpose. Finally, we close with something I consider one of the most practical gifts you can give yourself: a personal Rule of Life — a compass for integrating your faith into work, rest, family, and relationships, not just into an hour on Sunday morning.

You don't need a theology degree to thrive here. You need an open Bible, an open heart, and the willingness to go a little deeper than you have before. Whether you've been a believer for six months or thirty years, there is something here for you — and I'd be honored to be your guide for this season. Pull up a chair. Let's begin.
