A note from your teacher
John Bentley
If you're here, I'd guess you're someone who thinks deeply about things. Someone who notices their reactions, sometimes winces at them, and genuinely wants to do better — not out of self-criticism, but out of care. Care for your relationships, your work, your own inner life. That's not a small thing. That's the beginning of real change.
I also know that wanting to be more emotionally aware and actually being more emotionally aware can feel like two very different countries with no obvious map between them. You can know, intellectually, that you shouldn't snap at your partner when you're stressed, or shut down in a hard conversation, or lie awake at 2am replaying something that happened three days ago — and still find yourself doing all of it. That gap between knowing and doing is exactly what this school is built to close.
What I've found, working with and learning from the research on emotional agility, is that most of us are operating with a surprisingly thin emotional vocabulary. We know we feel "bad," "off," "overwhelmed." But anger is not the same as hurt, and anxiety is not the same as sadness — and those differences matter enormously when it comes to figuring out what you actually need in a moment. Precision is power here. When you can name what you're feeling with accuracy, something shifts. The emotion stops being a storm you're caught in and starts being a signal you can read.
That's the heart of what we do in this lab. We go deep on five core emotions — anger, anxiety, embarrassment, hurt, and sadness — not to catalog them, but to understand them from the inside out. What does each one feel like in your body before your thinking brain even catches up? What is each one actually trying to tell you? And what do you do with that information so it informs your choices rather than hijacking them? These aren't rhetorical questions. By the end of each section, you'll have concrete, personalized answers.
I want to be honest with you about what this school is and isn't. It isn't therapy, and it doesn't replace it. It won't resolve years of accumulated pain in a few lessons. What it will do is give you a framework that's grounded in real research, a set of tools that are genuinely practical, and — maybe most importantly — a new relationship with your own emotional life. One where difficult feelings are no longer the enemy, but a source of data you know how to work with.
If you're ready to stop white-knuckling your way through hard feelings and start navigating them with something closer to skill and grace, I'm glad you're here. Let's begin.
