"Investment decisions made without structural analytical capacity aren't strategy — they're expensive improvisation, and the current environment has no patience for it."

What you'll learn

What you'll be able to do

  • Diagnose how AI has fundamentally restructured the drivers of Foreign Direct Investment, moving value from tangible physical assets to data infrastructure, algorithm patents, and frontier human capital.
  • Map the new geography of techno-nationalism: interpret investment screening regimes (CFIUS, EU FDI Screening) as instruments of computational statecraft rather than mere security tools.
  • Analyse the shifting incentive landscape — from simple tax breaks to energy access, water rights, critical minerals, tested economic systems, educational levels, and sovereign AI capacity — and evaluate their implications for investment location decisions.
  • Deconstruct case studies in semiconductor geopolitics (TSMC, Samsung, Intel) and sovereign data infrastructure to extract transferable strategic lessons for cross-border investment decisions.
  • Identify and assess the risks posed by 'asset-light' algorithmic market penetration — where companies achieve foreign market dominance without a physical presence — on host-state tax bases and regulatory sovereignty.
  • Develop a strategic positioning framework that enables your organisation to anticipate where global capital is moving, why it is moving there, and how to act with advantage in an era where investment is intelligence.

The Death of the Old Playbook: How AI Has Restructured FDI

Establishes why the classical FDI framework — cost arbitrage, resource access, market proximity, tariff-jumping — has been overtaken by AI-driven logic and what now determines where capital flows.

3

The New Incentive Landscape: Energy, Minerals, Water, and Sovereign Compute

Deconstructs how the inputs that determine AI competitiveness — electricity, water, critical minerals, and sovereign model capacity — have eclipsed tax incentives as the decisive variables in investment location decisions.

If you've sat through enough geopolitical/geoeconomic risk briefings, you already know their limitation: they describe the terrain well after the capital has moved. You can read every CFIUS annual report, every EU screening regulation update, every semiconductor industry analysis — and still find yourself explaining to a board or a ministerial committee why a strategic exposure wasn't visible until it was already a problem. That gap between information and structural understanding is what this seminar is built to close.

I designed Capital & Intelligence because the analytical frameworks most organisations rely on — frameworks built for the era of bilateral or WTO/OECD investment treaties, comparative labour costs, and legible physical supply chains — are no longer adequate instruments for the environment we are actually in. AI has not merely added new variables to the FDI calculus. It has restructured what counts as a strategic asset, what counts as a security threat, and what counts as market penetration. When a company can achieve dominance in a foreign jurisdiction without a physical presence, without triggering a screening regime, and without generating domestic tax liability, the old playbook does not need updating. It needs replacing.

What I offer in this seminar is the analytical architecture for that replacement. We begin with first principles — not as an academic exercise, but because the strategic errors I see most often in practice stem from applying old investment theory to a fundamentally different asset environment. We move from there into the live architecture of techno-nationalism: reading CFIUS and the EU FDI Screening Regulation as what they actually are — instruments of computational statecraft — rather than as compliance friction to be managed. We examine how the incentive landscape has migrated from tax holidays to sovereign leverage over energy, water, critical minerals, rare earths, and national AI compute capacity, and what that means for where serious capital will locate over the next decade.

The semiconductor case studies — TSMC, Samsung, Intel, the CHIPS Act and its imitators across allied and non-allied jurisdictions — are deconstructed not for their news value but for the transferable logic they encode. Every case debrief is structured to yield principles you can carry back into your own institution and apply to live decisions. And the final module synthesises the seminar's analytical threads into a Strategic Positioning Framework: a structured instrument for stress-testing your organisation's FDI exposure, reading where capital is moving next, and designing legal and structural strategies that are built for an era in which investment decisions are, in the fullest sense, intelligence operations.

This seminar will not tell you what to think about every specific investment. It will build — with rigour, with real cases, and without condescension — the structural capacity to read the map accurately, act with advantage, and advise with authority at the level these decisions require. That is the commitment. I look forward to working with you.
