What you'll learn

What you'll be able to do

  • Identify and diagnose every major defensive coverage (Cover 0 through Cover 4, Tampa 2, and zone blitz packages) from a skill position player's perspective
  • Read pre-snap keys as a quarterback — safeties' depth and alignment, linebacker positioning, and corner leverage — to predict coverage and protection adjustments before the snap
  • Understand every offensive formation's strengths, weaknesses, and the personnel groupings that make each scheme work
  • Execute position-specific responsibilities correctly, including safety rotations in Cover 3, linebacker gap assignments against the run, and route adjustments based on coverage
  • Detect run vs. pass tendencies using offensive line foot stances, hand placement, and pre-snap weight distribution as a defensive player
  • Develop a systematic pre-snap mental checklist for any position — so every player can process situations faster and make better decisions under game-speed pressure

James L Barnes

If you've ever stood at the line of scrimmage — or watched from the sideline or the stands — and felt like everyone else was operating on information you didn't have access to, I built this for you.

Football is marketed as a physical game. And yes, the athleticism is real. But what separates players who make it from players who don't isn't always speed or size — it's processing speed. It's knowing where to look, what it means, and what to do about it before the ball is snapped. That's a teachable skill. I made Football IQ Lab because I couldn't find a curriculum that actually taught it — not the "here's what Cover 2 looks like" surface-level version, but the real film-room stuff. The pre-snap keys. The position-by-position assignments. The mental checklist that lets you play fast because you've already done the thinking.

Here's what I know to be true: most players practice their feet and their hands, but they never systematically practice their eyes. They learn their own assignment but couldn't tell you what the safety's depth is telling the quarterback, or how a tight end's split is tipping the run scheme to the linebacker across the line. Football IQ Lab changes that. We build your mental game from the foundation — formation recognition, personnel groupings, the language of the game — and layer on coverage diagnosis, pre-snap reads, position-specific responsibilities, and finally in-game adjustment principles that make everything click.

I'm not going to pretend this is easy material. It takes reps, just like any skill. But I've designed every section so the "why" comes before the "what" — you'll never be memorizing a rule without understanding the football reason behind it. By the time you're done, you'll watch a defense walk out and immediately start cataloging: safeties' depth, linebacker alignment, corner technique. You'll feel the game slowing down. That's not magic. That's IQ.

Whether you're a high school player trying to earn a starting role, a recreational league quarterback who wants to stop guessing, a coach looking to sharpen your scheme vocabulary and your teaching, or a fan who's tired of loving this game without truly understanding it — you belong here. Come sit in the film room. Let's break it down together.
