I built this framework because I needed a model precise enough to tell me not just what to change in a human system — but exactly where and why, before the client ever makes a conscious choice.Joseph Riggio

What you'll learn

What you'll be able to do

  • Map and apply all eight rungs of Riggio's Ladder of Perception™ — from Direct Sensory Awareness through Cybernetic Feedback — as a living diagnostic tool for any performance or outcome gap
  • Distinguish and operationalize the four core constructs of Sensory Systems Control Theory (SSCT): feed-forward narrative control, perceptual filtering, sense-making loops, and cybernetic correction
  • Integrate Miller's T.O.T.E., Boyd's OODA Loop, and Torbert's P.A.R.R. as interlaced, mutually reinforcing feedback architectures within the Fractal Navigator Framework™
  • Identify and redesign the narrative structures (feed-forward mechanisms) that silently organize a client's or team's Perception before any conscious decision is made
  • Conduct structured interventions at each rung of the Ladder — knowing precisely when and where to enter the system to produce leverage-point change in behavior and results
  • Design fractal high-performance systems for individuals, teams, or organizations that self-correct across multiple scales using interwoven cybernetic loops rather than linear improvement plans

1

Foundations of Sensory Systems Control Theory

Establishes the intellectual and conceptual ground for the entire curriculum. Students learn why classical linear performance models fail, are introduced to cybernetics as an alternative paradigm, and receive a precise first-pass map of SSCT's four core constructs — feed-forward narrative control, perceptual filtering, sense-making loops, and cybernetic correction — before any detail is unpacked. This module functions as the prerequisite anchor that all later modules assume.

  • 1.1Why Cybernetics? The Limits of Linear Performance ModelsIncluded
  • 1.2SSCT Core Architecture: The Four ConstructsIncluded
  • 1.3The Fractal Navigator Framework™: High-Performance Systems Across ScalesIncluded
2

The Ladder of Perception™ — Rung by Rung

Delivers a rigorous, sequential walkthrough of all eight rungs of Riggio's Ladder of Perception™ in their correct designed order: Direct Sensory Awareness → Perception → Sense-Making → Meaning-Making → Decision-Making → Action-Taking (Behavior) → Results/Outcomes → Feedback (Cybernetic Loops). Each rung is treated as both a stage of human information processing and a distinct intervention address. The module corrects the draft's compression of the Ladder into three lessons by giving the base rungs, middle rungs, and upper rungs each their own dedicated, detailed treatment while preserving the draft's organizing logic.

  • 2.1The Base of the Ladder: Direct Sensory Awareness and PerceptionIncluded
  • 2.2The Middle Rungs: Sense-Making, Meaning-Making, and Decision-MakingIncluded
  • 2.3The Upper Rungs: Action-Taking, Results/Outcomes, and Cybernetic FeedbackIncluded
3

Narrative as Feed-Forward Control — The Invisible Architect

Delivers the module the draft outlined well and preserves its three-lesson structure, while adding conceptual precision about the feed-forward mechanism's exact relationship to the Ladder: narrative operates upstream of Rung 1 (Direct Sensory Awareness) to pre-organize what the system will even be capable of perceiving. This is the 'invisible architect' that sets the entire Ladder's operating conditions before any conscious processing begins. Students learn to diagnose existing narrative structures and redesign them as deliberate systemic interventions.

  • 3.1How Narrative Operates Before Perception: The Feed-Forward MechanismIncluded
  • 3.2Diagnosing Limiting and Generative Narrative StructuresIncluded
  • 3.3Redesigning Narrative Structures as Systemic InterventionIncluded
4

Interlaced Cybernetic Frameworks — T.O.T.E., OODA, and P.A.R.R.

Delivers the draft's four-lesson structure intact and adds a prerequisite integration lesson that establishes the shared cybernetic vocabulary (Test, Operate, Exit; Observe, Orient, Decide, Act; Perceive, Appraise, Respond, Return) across all three frameworks before students work with them individually. Each framework is understood at its native scale — micro (T.O.T.E.), meso (OODA), and macro (P.A.R.R.) — and then explicitly mapped onto the Ladder's rungs. The module culminates in the interlaced unified architecture, which is the direct prerequisite for Module 5's precision intervention work.

  • 4.1Miller's T.O.T.E.: The Micro-Loop of Behavioral CorrectionIncluded
  • 4.2Boyd's OODA Loop: The Meso-Loop of Adaptive Decision CyclesIncluded
  • 4.3Torbert's P.A.R.R.: The Macro-Loop of Transformative LearningIncluded
  • 4.4The Interlaced System: Running T.O.T.E., OODA, and P.A.R.R. as a Unified ArchitectureIncluded
5

Precision Intervention at Every Rung — The Diagnostic Practitioner

Transforms students from SSCT theorists into diagnostic practitioners. Preserves the draft's four-lesson structure and sharpens each lesson to focus on the practitioner's most critical skill: determining the exact rung where the performance gap is generated (not merely expressed), and selecting the intervention tool precisely matched to that rung. Adds an explicit lesson on the diagnostic process itself — how to read a client or team system and locate the leverage rung — which was implicit in the draft but never made operational.

  • 5.1The Intervention Map: When and Where to Enter the LadderIncluded
  • 5.2Intervening at the Base: Shifting Sensory Awareness and Perceptual ArchitectureIncluded
  • 5.3Intervening in the Middle: Restructuring Sense-Making and Meaning-MakingIncluded
  • 5.4Intervening at the Top: Decision Architecture, Behavior Design, and Results EngineeringIncluded
6

Designing Fractal High-Performance Systems

The capstone module: students integrate everything from Modules 1–5 to design complete, self-correcting fractal performance systems at the individual, team, and organizational scale. Adds a prerequisite lesson on design principles (missing from the draft) before the scale-specific design lessons, ensuring students have explicit architecture principles to apply rather than improvising. The module closes with a new integration and stress-testing lesson that validates each design against the full SSCT framework before real-world deployment.

  • 6.1Architecture Principles for Self-Correcting Performance SystemsIncluded
  • 6.2Designing for Individuals: The Personal Fractal Performance SystemIncluded
  • 6.3Designing for Teams and Organizations: Scaling the Fractal SystemIncluded

Who it's for

Is this you?

High-Performance Coaches

You're ready to move beyond coaching heuristics and into a systems-theoretic framework that lets you locate, map, and intervene in a client's performance architecture with genuine diagnostic precision.

Organizational Consultants

You need a scalable cybernetic model — not a workshop toolkit — that explains how sense-making and narrative control operate at team and organizational scale, and how to redesign them.

NLP & Change-Work Practitioners

You know the techniques work, but SSCT gives you the systems-theoretic scaffolding to understand exactly why, where to apply them on the Ladder, and how to design new interventions from first principles.

Executive Leaders

You make high-stakes decisions under complexity every day — this framework gives you a rigorous model for understanding how your own perception and narrative feed-forward are shaping those decisions before you're aware of it.

Applied Behavioral Scientists

You think in systems and want a practitioner-grade cybernetic framework that integrates T.O.T.E., OODA, and P.A.R.R. into a unified, field-applicable architecture — not a pop-science summary.

Leadership Development Designers

You design programs that are supposed to create lasting behavioral change, and you're ready for a model that explains how to engineer self-correcting performance systems that hold across individual, team, and organizational scale.

Joseph Riggio

If you've been practicing at a serious level — coaching executives, consulting inside complex organizations, running change-work with high-stakes clients — you've likely hit the ceiling of the models you were trained in. Not because the models are wrong, exactly. But because they're incomplete. They describe behavior without mapping the system that generates it. They offer tools without explaining the architecture those tools are entering. And when your interventions don't hold, or don't transfer, or produce results at one scale but not another, the model gives you no diagnostic language for why.

That's the problem I built Sensory Systems Control Theory to solve. Not as an academic exercise — as a practitioner's necessity. The core question I kept returning to was this: where, precisely, is human performance actually organized? Not at the level of behavior, which is the output. Not at the level of belief, which is already a downstream interpretation. But at the level of perception itself — the moment before meaning is assigned, where the feed-forward narrative structure is already shaping what a person is even capable of noticing. That's where leverage lives. And until you can locate it, map it, and intervene in it with precision, you're working on the surface of the system.

The Fractal Navigator is the course I wish had existed when I was building this framework. We go rung by rung through the full Ladder of Perception™ — not as a metaphor to understand intellectually, but as a living diagnostic tool you will use with real clients, in real time, to locate exactly where a performance or outcome gap is organized in the system. We work with the four constructs of SSCT until they become second nature. And then we integrate Miller, Boyd, and Torbert — not as add-ons, but as interlaced feedback architectures that map what's happening simultaneously at the micro, meso, and macro scales of any human performance system.

The final module is what separates this from any other advanced training I know of: we design fractal high-performance systems. Self-correcting architectures that function across individual, team, and organizational scale using the same recursive cybernetic logic. These are not improvement plans. They are systems that generate their own correction — and that's a fundamentally different thing.

I want to be honest with you about who this is and isn't for. If you're looking for frameworks you can learn in a weekend and immediately package into a product, this isn't the course. This is demanding work. The theory is dense because the territory is dense — and any model that simplifies it more than this one does is lying to you about the complexity of human systems. But if you are the kind of practitioner who is energized rather than exhausted by that rigor, who wants to understand why your interventions work and be able to design new ones from first principles — this is exactly where you belong. Come ready to think. Come ready to work. I'll meet you there.
