"A modification you can't measure is just an expense — we're here to prove every single gain."James Bourn

What you'll learn

What you'll be able to do

  • Diagnose and interpret engine data using an OBD-II scanner to identify performance bottlenecks
  • Plan and execute a bolt-on modification strategy (intake, exhaust, intercooler) matched to your specific build goals
  • Safely tune air-fuel ratios and ignition timing using accessible tuning software for measurable power gains
  • Understand suspension geometry and correctly set corner weights, camber, and alignment for street or track use
  • Source quality parts, avoid common counterfeit pitfalls, and build a prioritized upgrade budget
  • Datalog and benchmark your car's performance before and after each mod to validate real-world results

1

Know Your Weapon: Diagnostics & Benchmarking

Before turning a single wrench, enthusiasts must understand exactly what their car is doing right now. This foundational module establishes the diagnostic and data-gathering skills that underpin every decision in the build. Parts budgeting is introduced here so cost thinking is embedded from day one — not bolted on as an afterthought.

  • 1.1OBD-II Deep Dive: Reading What Your Car Is Telling YouIncluded
  • 1.2Establishing Your Baseline: Datalogs, Pulls & Real NumbersIncluded
  • 1.3Budgeting & Parts Strategy: Spending Smart, Not Just SpendingIncluded
2

Bolt-On Power: Intake, Exhaust & Forced Induction Upgrades

With a solid baseline in hand, students now execute their first physical modifications. The module follows the natural flow of air through the engine — intake, then exhaust, then charge cooling — ensuring each lesson builds on the last. Prerequisites from Module 1 (baseline datalogs) are explicitly referenced so students can immediately validate each change.

  • 2.1Cold Air & Intake Systems: Feeding the Engine More EfficientlyIncluded
  • 2.2Exhaust Systems: Cat-Back, Headers & the Backpressure RealityIncluded
  • 2.3Intercoolers & Charge Cooling: Keeping Forced Induction HonestIncluded
3

ECU Tuning: Air-Fuel Ratios, Ignition Timing & Accessible Software

The highest-leverage module in the curriculum. Students move from bolt-on hardware to the software layer that unlocks everything they have already installed. The module is sequenced so that ECU fundamentals come first, wideband AFR tuning second, ignition timing third, and boost management last — mirroring the order of risk and complexity. No boost tuning is attempted before AFR and timing are understood.

  • 3.1Engine Management Fundamentals: Maps, Tables & What the ECU ControlsIncluded
  • 3.2Wideband O2 & AFR Tuning: Dialling In the Fuel MapIncluded
  • 3.3Ignition Timing: Finding the Edge Without Crossing ItIncluded
  • 3.4Boost Control & Forced Induction TuningIncluded
4

Suspension & Handling: Geometry, Setup & Real-World Tuning

Power is meaningless if the car cannot put it down or change direction. This module covers the full chassis setup workflow: geometry theory first, corner weighting second, and damper/spring selection last — ensuring students understand why before they touch the hardware. An introductory safety lesson on wheel, tyre, and brake prerequisites is added to prevent a common and dangerous gap: enthusiasts who tune suspension geometry without having addressed worn or inadequate tyres and brakes first.

  • 4.1Tyres, Brakes & Safety Prerequisites: The Grip FoundationIncluded
  • 4.2Suspension Geometry Fundamentals: Camber, Caster, Toe & Why They MatterIncluded
  • 4.3Corner Weighting & Ride Height: Balancing the ChassisIncluded
  • 4.4Coilovers, Springs & Dampers: Choosing and Setting Up Your RideIncluded
5

Validating Your Build: Datalogs, Benchmarks & Continuous Improvement

The closing module closes the feedback loop opened in Module 1. Students re-run the same benchmarks they established at the start, interpret the delta with statistical rigour, ensure the build is safe and compliant, and plan the next stage. This module transforms a collection of individual modifications into a coherent, evidence-based build narrative.

  • 5.1Post-Mod Datalogs: Proving Your Gains Are RealIncluded
  • 5.2Reliability, Safety & Street-Legal ComplianceIncluded
  • 5.3Building Your Next Stage: Planning the Ongoing BuildIncluded

Who it's for

Is this you?

The weekend wrench-turner

Does their own servicing and is ready to go further — this school gives them the structured knowledge to move from maintenance into real performance work.

The frustrated bolt-on buyer

Already spent money on parts that didn't deliver obvious results and wants to understand why — and how to do it right from here.

The track-day newcomer

Taking their car to circuit days and realising that suspension setup and handling balance matter as much as engine output.

The forced-induction hobbyist

Running a turbo or supercharged platform and wants to safely tune boost, AFR, and ignition timing without handing the car to a shop every time.

The budget-conscious builder

Working with a fixed upgrade budget and wants a prioritised, waste-nothing strategy rather than buying whatever the forum recommends this week.

The data-driven enthusiast

Loves numbers and wants to benchmark, datalog, and validate every modification with real evidence — not gut feel.

James Bourn

I know exactly where you are right now. You've got a car with real potential, a YouTube rabbit hole that's three hours deep, and a parts list that's grown longer every week. Maybe you've already bought something — a cold-air intake, a cat-back — and you're honestly not sure if it did anything. That uncertainty is frustrating. It's also completely fixable.

I built Garage Tuner because the information you need to actually tune a car well is scattered, gatekept behind shop doors, or buried in forum threads where half the advice contradicts the other half. What you deserve is a structured, straight-talking path from "I want more power" to "I can prove I have it, and I know exactly why." That's what this school is.

Here's what I want you to take seriously: the biggest gains don't come from the most expensive part. They come from understanding your engine's data before you spend a dollar, choosing modifications that work together as a system, and then tuning the result properly rather than hoping it sorts itself out. The OBD-II diagnostics module, the datalogs, the wideband O2 work — that's not the boring prep. That is the performance. Everything else is just hardware.

We'll go through bolt-on modifications with a hard look at what the marketing doesn't tell you — yes, including the backpressure debate. We'll open up ECU tuning so air-fuel ratios and ignition timing maps aren't intimidating black boxes anymore. We'll set up suspension geometry correctly, because a car that corners flat and predictably is faster everywhere, not just on a skidpad. And at every stage, we'll validate. Real datalogs, real numbers, real accountability to the build.

I'm not going to tell you this is easy, because it isn't. But it is learnable — and once you've dialled in a fuel map yourself and seen the before-and-after datalog, you'll understand your car in a way that no amount of reading about someone else's build ever gets you. Come in, get your hands dirty, and let's build something worth driving.

Welcome to the garage.
