Speak the language your ancestors carried
Heritage Bridge Academy teaches diaspora adults and families the alphabets, sounds, and everyday language of Mandinka and Wolof — two living West African languages — so that reconnecting with your heritage feels like coming home, not studying for an exam.

A note from your teacher
Wendy Clardy
I want to start by saying something directly to you: I see you. I know what it feels like to carry a heritage inside you that you can't fully name yet — to feel the pull of a place, a people, an ancestry, and not quite have the words to reach back. That longing is real. And it deserves more than a language app with flashcards.
That is why I created Heritage Bridge Academy.
This school was built for diaspora adults and families — African-American, Afro-Caribbean, Afro-European, and beyond — who feel called to reconnect with their West African roots through language. Not through a history textbook, and not through a dry grammar drill. Through the living, breathing words that Mandinka and Wolof speakers use every single day: to greet their neighbors, to honor their elders, to name their children, to pray, to celebrate, and to mourn.
What you will find here is not just vocabulary. Every lesson comes wrapped in context, because I believe deeply that you cannot truly learn a word until you understand the world it comes from. When we practice greetings, I will walk you through why the greeting ceremony in West African culture is an act of profound respect — not a formality. When we learn family vocabulary, I will share what clan names carry about lineage and belonging. When we sit with proverbs, I will tell you the stories behind them. Language, here, is a homecoming.
I also want to be honest with you about something: this is not a school that promises fluency in 30 days. What I promise instead is a genuine foundation — the alphabets, the sounds, the core vocabulary of daily life and family and culture — and the habits and resources to keep growing from there. I will celebrate every single small win with you along the way, because every word you learn is a thread you are reattaching to something ancient and yours.
If you have been waiting for the right moment to start, let this be it. Your ancestors spoke these words. Now it is your turn.
