IB MYP Chemistry: Inquiry-Based Science for Ages 11–16

A fully IB-aligned MYP Chemistry course for students aged 11–16 that builds deep conceptual understanding through inquiry, real-world global contexts, and the ATL skills students need to thrive — in the MYP and far beyond.

Perfect for: Students aged 11–16 enrolled in or following the IB Middle Years Programme (MYP Years 1–5); home-educated students pursuing an internationally recognised science framework; international school learners seeking supplementary support; tutors and independent educators delivering MYP-aligned chemistry instruction.

IB MYP Chemistry: Inquiry-Based Science for Ages 11–16

Chemistry That Makes Students Think, Not Just Memorise

Most chemistry courses hand students a formula sheet and a set of procedures to follow. This course does something different. Built from the ground up around the IB Middle Years Programme framework, every unit is driven by a compelling statement of inquiry, anchored in a global context, and structured so that students construct genuine understanding rather than recite it back.

Whether your student is encountering the periodic table for the first time or preparing to transition into the IB Diploma Programme, this course meets them where they are. Topics progress naturally across the MYP years (Years 1–5), developing the key concepts of change, relationships, and systems alongside related concepts such as transformation, patterns, and evidence — exactly as the IB intends.

Inquiry First. Skills Always.

Each unit is woven together with explicit Approaches to Learning (ATL) skills — from scientific communication and critical thinking to collaboration and information literacy. Students don't just learn chemistry; they learn how to learn chemistry. Formative tasks, guided investigations, and summative assessments mirror the MYP assessment criteria (A–D) so students are never surprised by what's expected of them, and teachers and parents can track meaningful progress at every stage.

A Complete, Ready-to-Use Resource — With Room to Make It Your Own

This course is designed for home educators, international school students, tutors, and self-directed learners who want a rigorous, coherent MYP Chemistry experience without the guesswork of piecing one together. Every lesson is purposeful, every assessment is criterion-referenced, and every global context connection is authentic — not an afterthought. Come ready to ask questions, challenge assumptions, and discover that chemistry is one of the most human subjects there is.

What you'll be able to do

  • Demonstrate understanding of core MYP Chemistry concepts — including atomic structure, bonding, the periodic table, chemical reactions, stoichiometry, acids and bases, and organic chemistry — organised by MYP key and related concepts.
  • Apply the MYP inquiry cycle to design and carry out scientific investigations, collect and process data, and evaluate conclusions against real-world evidence.
  • Analyse and evaluate chemical phenomena through at least four distinct MYP global contexts (e.g., Globalisation & Sustainability; Scientific & Technical Innovation), making genuine connections between chemistry and the wider world.
  • Produce criterion-referenced work that maps directly to MYP Assessment Criteria A (Knowing & Understanding), B (Inquiring & Designing), C (Processing & Evaluating), and D (Reflecting on the Impact of Science).
  • Develop and articulate explicit Approaches to Learning (ATL) skills — including scientific literacy, critical thinking, and self-management — within every unit of study.
  • Construct clear, accurate scientific communication in a range of formats: lab reports, structured essays, data commentary, and multimodal presentations.
  • Build the conceptual vocabulary and transferable reasoning habits needed for a confident transition into IB Diploma Programme (DP) Chemistry.
  • Reflect critically on the ethical, environmental, and societal dimensions of chemical science, forming and defending evidence-based personal positions.

Geoffrey Mitchell

Hi, I'm so glad you're here. I've spent years working within the IB Middle Years Programme — first as a classroom chemistry teacher, then as a curriculum designer — and in that time I noticed the same gap again and again: students who understood *what* to study for MYP Chemistry, but not *why* it was structured the way it was, or how to actually think like a scientist within it. This course is my answer to that gap. Everything here is built the way I wish MYP resources had been built when I started — with the inquiry cycle at the centre, global contexts that actually spark conversation, and ATL skills treated as genuine learning objectives rather than a checkbox. I designed this for the curious, the rigorous, and the occasionally frustrated student who wants to understand chemistry deeply, not just pass a test. I can't wait to see what questions you bring.
