Engineer How Humans Perceive, Decide, and Act
Master Joseph Riggio's Ladder of Perception™ and Sensory Control Systems Theory — a rigorous cybernetic framework that lets coaches, consultants, and organizational leaders precisely diagnose where performance breaks down and architect durable, self-correcting high-performance systems at every scale.

"The moment you can locate exactly which rung of the Ladder is producing the breakdown, the intervention stops being an art and becomes an engineering decision."— Joseph Riggio

What you'll learn
What you'll be able to do
- Map every rung of Riggio's Ladder of Perception™ — from Direct Sensory Awareness through Feedback — and precisely locate where performance breakdowns occur in yourself and your clients.
- Apply Sensory Control Systems Theory (SSCT) as a diagnostic instrument to decode how perception, sense-making, and meaning-making silently govern decision-making and behavior before conscious thought intervenes.
- Interlace Miller's T.O.T.E., Boyd's OODA Loop, and Torbert's P.A.R.R. into a single, coherent cybernetic architecture that monitors and corrects performance across multiple simultaneous feedback timescales.
- Use the Fractal Navigator Framework™ to design high-performance systems — personal, team, or organizational — that remain adaptive and self-correcting at every scale of operation.
- Engineer narrative as a feed-forward control mechanism that pre-structures perception at the base of the Ladder, allowing deliberate direction of attention, interpretation, and consequent action before an event unfolds.
- Conduct live intervention sessions using SSCT to shift a client's or team's cybernetic loops — producing measurable, durable improvements in outcomes through targeted changes at the correct level of the Ladder.

Foundations of Sensory Control Systems Theory
Establishes the intellectual and experiential ground for everything that follows. Students build precise fluency in cybernetic principles and control-systems thinking, then meet Riggio's SSCT as a coherent theoretical framework before any rung of the Ladder is examined in detail. Without this foundation, later diagnostic and intervention work lacks the conceptual scaffolding needed for rigorous application.
- 1.1Cybernetics, Control Systems, and Human PerformanceIncluded
- 1.2The Architecture of the Ladder of Perception™Included
- 1.3Direct Sensory Awareness — The Unfiltered BaseIncluded
Climbing the Ladder — From Raw Signal to Decisive Action
Takes students rung by rung through the upper architecture of the Ladder, with deep focus on how each level transforms and constrains what is possible at the next. Special attention is paid to the hidden junctures — Sense-Making and Meaning-Making — where interpretation silently hardens into operating reality and shapes decisions before conscious deliberation begins. This module closes the loop by connecting Meaning-Making to Decision-Making and Action-Taking, making the full causal chain viscerally clear.
- 2.1Perception — The First FilterIncluded
- 2.2Sense-Making and Meaning-Making — Where Interpretation HardensIncluded
- 2.3Decision-Making, Action-Taking, and the Results LayerIncluded
The Feedback Architecture — Cybernetic Loops in Action
Introduces and integrates the three interlaced cybernetic frameworks — Miller's T.O.T.E., Boyd's OODA Loop, and Torbert's P.A.R.R. — as operating at distinct but interpenetrating timescales of performance feedback. Students learn to read these not as competing models but as fractal layers of a single cybernetic architecture. The Fractal Navigator Framework™ is introduced here as the structural principle that explains how these loops cohere and scale. This module is deliberately sequenced after the Ladder is fully internalized, so students can locate each model's inputs and outputs on specific rungs.
- 3.1Miller's T.O.T.E. — The Micro-Loop of BehaviorIncluded
- 3.2Boyd's OODA Loop — The Meso-Loop of Adaptive Decision CyclesIncluded
- 3.3Torbert's P.A.R.R. — The Macro-Loop of Action InquiryIncluded
- 3.4Fractal Navigator Framework™ — Scaling Cybernetic ArchitectureIncluded
Narrative as Feed-Forward Control
Develops the advanced SSCT principle that narrative — story, framing, language, and mental models — operates not merely as description of past events but as a feed-forward control mechanism that pre-structures Perception at the base of the Ladder before an event is encountered. This is the mechanism by which coaches, leaders, and performers can deliberately direct attention, interpretation, and action in advance. The module builds from conceptual distinction through engineering precision to full integration with the cybernetic architecture already constructed.
- 4.1Feed-Forward vs. Feedback — Reframing the Role of StoryIncluded
- 4.2Engineering Narrative as a Precision Control MechanismIncluded
- 4.3Narrative, OODA, and the Ladder — Closing the Feed-Forward LoopIncluded
SSCT Diagnostic Mastery — Reading Systems in Real Time
Trains students to apply the full SSCT framework as a live diagnostic instrument — not a post-hoc analysis tool. Students develop the perceptual acuity and cognitive fluency to track Ladder-rung activity in real time during conversations, team interactions, and organizational behaviors, and to identify the precise locus of control breakdown that explains current performance results. The module extends from individual diagnosis to team and organizational scale, ensuring the Fractal Navigator Framework™ is operationalized diagnostically.
- 5.1The SSCT Diagnostic Lens — Locating the Locus of ControlIncluded
- 5.2Prerequisite Gaps Detected — Individual Diagnostic PracticeIncluded
- 5.3Team and Organizational Diagnosis — Scaling SSCTIncluded
Live Intervention — Engineering Measurable Performance Change
Integrates the entire course into live, supervised intervention practice. Students move from diagnosis to deliberate intervention design, execute full SSCT sessions, and design durable high-performance systems that embed the cybernetic architecture into ongoing operational practice. The module is explicitly outcome-oriented: every practicum produces measurable, documented changes at a specified Ladder rung and cybernetic loop, creating an evidence base for each student's emerging SSCT practice.
- 6.1Intervention Architecture — Selecting the Correct Rung and ToolIncluded
- 6.2Conducting Live SSCT Sessions — Full Integration PracticumIncluded
- 6.3Designing Durable High-Performance Systems — From Session to SystemIncluded

A note from your teacher
Joseph Riggio
If you have spent years working with high-performing individuals and teams, you already know the frustration intimately: you can see that something is not working, you can name the behavior, you can even sense the pattern — and yet the precise mechanism producing it remains just out of reach. You apply a technique. You get a shift. And then, weeks later, the old configuration reasserts itself, as if the system never changed at all. Because structurally, it did not.
That is the problem I built Sensory Control Systems Theory to solve. Not as a philosophical position, but as an engineering challenge. Human performance is a control system — a cybernetic architecture in which raw sensory data is transformed, rung by rung, into perception, sense-making, meaning, decision, action, and result. Every breakdown, every inconsistency, every gap between potential and output has a specific address on that architecture. It lives on a particular rung of the Ladder of Perception™. And once you can locate it precisely, the intervention almost selects itself.
In this school, I am going to give you that diagnostic precision. You will learn to read a client or a team the way a systems engineer reads a circuit — not guessing at the problem from the output, but tracing the signal back through the chain until you find exactly where the filter is distorting, where the loop is failing to close, where the feed-forward narrative is loading the system with assumptions that guarantee the result you are trying to change. You will learn T.O.T.E., OODA, and P.A.R.R. not as separate models to file away, but as three nested timescales of cybernetic feedback that operate simultaneously in every human performance context — and you will learn to work all three at once.
I want to address the objection I hear most often: this sounds like theory. It is not theory for its own sake. Every concept in this curriculum is load-bearing — it is there because practitioners who worked without it made errors that practitioners who had it did not make. The Fractal Navigator Framework™ exists because scaling an intervention that works for an individual to a team without a structural framework produces inconsistent results. Narrative as feed-forward control exists because waiting for a client to generate a new perception after an event is a far slower and less reliable lever than pre-structuring the perceptual field before the event begins. These are precision instruments. I will teach you to use them with precision.
By the time you complete Module 6, you will be conducting live SSCT sessions — diagnosing in real time, selecting the correct rung and the correct tool, intervening at the structural level, and designing systems that hold their new configuration. That is the outcome I am committed to delivering: not familiarity with a model, but genuine mastery of a new way of seeing and working. If that is what you are ready for, I am glad you are here.
