Design Your Ideal Life

Students begin by asking the question most schools never ask: 'What kind of life do you actually want?' Before a single career is introduced, students define their ideal lifestyle across income, schedule, environment, family, travel, housing, and values. This module establishes the personal foundation — the 'Life Filter' — that every future career will be evaluated against. All five Signature Exercises in this module are prerequisites for the rest of the course.

  • 1.1The Wrong Question We've All Been AskedIncluded
  • 1.2What Does Your Ideal Life Actually Look Like?Included
  • 1.3Your Values Are Your GPSIncluded
  • 1.4The Dream Life CalculatorIncluded
  • 1.5Lifestyle Match Ranking — Building Your Career FilterIncluded
2

What Careers Need To Provide

Before students evaluate a single specific career, they learn the professional literacy required to research and compare any career fairly and accurately. This module covers total compensation (not just salary), all major education and training pathways with honest cost and timeline data, how to read labor market data like a researcher, and how to apply the Lifestyle Match Score from Module 1 to real career information. This module is the research toolkit that powers every career exploration module that follows.

  • 2.1Beyond the Salary Number — Total Compensation & Real PayIncluded
  • 2.2Education Pathways — The Real Costs, Benefits, and TimelinesIncluded
  • 2.3How to Research Any Career — Reading the Data Like a ProIncluded
  • 2.4Applying Your Lifestyle Match ScoreIncluded
3

Healthcare Careers

Students explore the full breadth of the healthcare industry — one of the largest, fastest-growing, and most pathway-diverse sectors in the U.S. economy. Far beyond doctors and nurses, healthcare includes clinical, technical, administrative, and allied health roles accessible through certifications, associate degrees, bachelor's degrees, and graduate training. Students apply their Lifestyle Match Score to real healthcare career spotlights and learn what it truly means to work in a helping profession.

  • 3.1The Healthcare Universe — More Than Doctors and NursesIncluded
  • 3.2Healthcare Career Spotlights — Clinical PathwaysIncluded
  • 3.3Healthcare Career Spotlights — Technical, Administrative & Allied HealthIncluded
4

Trades, Apprenticeships & Technology Careers

Students explore two of the most misunderstood and misrepresented career sectors in high school guidance: skilled trades and technology. Trades are repositioned not as fallback options but as legitimate wealth-building pathways often superior to four-year degrees in total lifetime earnings and lifestyle quality. Technology careers are demystified — students learn that the tech industry includes dozens of roles that do not require a computer science degree. Both sectors are explored through Career Spotlights with full lifestyle data.

  • 4.1Trades & Skilled Crafts — The Overlooked Path to WealthIncluded
  • 4.2Trades Career Spotlights — Construction, Manufacturing & TransportationIncluded
  • 4.3Technology Careers — Paths That Don't All Require a CS DegreeIncluded
  • 4.4Technology Career Spotlights — Emerging & Specialized TechIncluded
5

Business, Finance, Creative Arts & Legal Careers

Students explore four major career sectors that are frequently oversimplified in school guidance: business and finance (reduced to 'go into business'), creative arts and media (dismissed as impractical), and legal careers (reduced to 'become a lawyer'). This module exposes the full ecosystem of roles within each sector — from no-degree entry points to graduate-level specializations — and applies the Lifestyle Match framework to help students make informed choices. Education and Public Service careers are introduced here with dedicated spotlight coverage.

  • 5.1Business, Finance & Education/Public Service Career SpotlightsIncluded
  • 5.2Creative & Media Career SpotlightsIncluded
  • 5.3Legal Career Spotlights — Beyond 'Become a Lawyer'Included
6

Careers Most Students Never Hear About — Agriculture, Energy, Engineering & Hospitality

Students are introduced to the career sectors most underrepresented in high school guidance counseling: hidden-gem careers in unusual fields, agriculture and environmental sciences, energy (including renewable energy), engineering and manufacturing, and hospitality, sales, marketing, and human services. Many of these careers offer strong incomes, clear advancement paths, and lifestyle qualities that students would rank highly — but they never appear in standard career fairs. This module expands the student's perceived universe of options before they narrow their choices.

  • 6.1Careers Most Students Never Hear AboutIncluded
  • 6.2Agriculture, Energy & Environmental CareersIncluded
  • 6.3Engineering & Manufacturing Career SpotlightsIncluded
  • 6.4Hospitality, Sales, Marketing & Human Services CareersIncluded
7

Mindset, Success Habits & Your Personal Roadmap

Having explored 50+ careers and refined their personal Lifestyle Match criteria, students now shift from exploration to execution. This module teaches the mindset and habits that separate successful goal-pursuers from those who stay stuck, then guides students through the final three Signature Exercises: Top 3 Career Deep Dive, Personal Roadmap, and the completed Life By Design Portfolio. This module is the capstone of the entire course and should feel celebratory, empowering, and actionable.

  • 7.1Mindset & Success Habits — The Foundation Nobody TeachesIncluded
  • 7.2Top 3 Career Deep DiveIncluded
  • 7.3Build Your Personal RoadmapIncluded
  • 7.4The Life By Design Portfolio — Putting It All TogetherIncluded

Hey — if you're a teenager reading this, I want to say something nobody probably says enough: the pressure you're feeling right now is real, and it's not your fault. You're being asked to make one of the biggest decisions of your life before you've had any real tools to think it through. That's just pressure with a deadline.

And if you're a parent reading this — you've probably watched your kid freeze up, guess randomly, or just say "I don't know" every time the career conversation comes up. Not because they're unmotivated. But because the question is backwards. "What do you want to be?" is the wrong starting point. It puts the cart before the horse every single time.

I built Life By Design to fix that. Giving students a logical, low-pressure process that starts where it should: with the life they actually want to live. We use real tools, like the Dream Life Calculator and the Lifestyle Match Score, to turn fuzzy feelings into concrete filters. We look at careers honestly, the pay, the paths, the tradeoffs, across more than 50 options including trades, certifications, and fields that nobody talks about at career day. No career is dressed up or talked down. You get to compare them against your actual goals.

I respect your intelligence too much to waste your time with vague inspiration or motivational fluff. Every lesson in this course is practical, direct, and built to move you forward. You'll leave knowing more about yourself, more about your real options, and exactly what your next step is. Let's get to work.
