1

How Strength Actually Works

Establishes the physiological and psychological foundation before any bar is touched. Students learn why the body adapts to stress, what progressive overload really means, and how to set up a safe, well-equipped training environment — ensuring every subsequent lesson lands on solid conceptual ground.

  • 1.1The Science of Getting StrongerIncluded
  • 1.2Progressive Overload — The Master PrincipleIncluded
  • 1.3Setting Up for Success — Equipment, Environment, and MindsetIncluded
2

The Big Four — Technique Foundations

The technical core of the curriculum. Each major compound lift is taught from first principles — stance and grip through the full range of motion — before a dedicated lesson addresses the form breakdowns common to all four. Sequenced so students drill one lift per lesson, building confidence before learning to self-diagnose errors.

  • 2.1The SquatIncluded
  • 2.2The DeadliftIncluded
  • 2.3The Bench PressIncluded
  • 2.4The Overhead PressIncluded
  • 2.5Identifying and Correcting Form BreakdownsIncluded
3

Building Your Programme

Translates scientific principles and technical skills into a personalised, week-by-week training plan. Covers the variables that determine programme quality, how to sequence and balance sessions around the student's life, and how to structure each individual session for safety and maximum output.

  • 3.1Programme Design Principles — Frequency, Volume, and IntensityIncluded
  • 3.2Building Your Personalised Weekly PlanIncluded
  • 3.3Session Structure — Warm-Up to Cool-DownIncluded
4

Nutrition for Strength

Provides the nutritional literacy needed to fuel training, support muscle protein synthesis, and manage body composition — without turning eating into a second job. Sequenced after programme design so students immediately apply nutrition principles to their newly built training plan.

  • 4.1Protein — The Non-NegotiableIncluded
  • 4.2Calories, Carbs, and Fats — Fuelling Training Without Overthinking ItIncluded
5

Recovery — Where Strength Is Actually Built

Teaches students that the training session is only the stimulus — adaptation happens during recovery. Covers the two pillars of recovery (sleep and active management) and equips students to recognise and reverse early signs of overtraining before they derail progress.

  • 5.1Sleep — Your Most Powerful Recovery ToolIncluded
  • 5.2Active Recovery, Stress Management, and Avoiding OvertrainingIncluded
6

Tracking Progress and Staying on Course

Closes the feedback loop. Students learn exactly what to measure, how often, and what the numbers mean — then build the decision-making skills to progress loads, add volume, schedule deloads, and adapt their programme when life inevitably intervenes. Placed last so students have real data from their first training weeks to work with.

  • 6.1Metrics That Matter — What to Track and HowIncluded
  • 6.2When and How to Progress — Load, Volume, and DeloadsIncluded
  • 6.3Adapting When Life Gets in the WayIncluded

Who it's for

Is this you?

The Complete Beginner

You've never touched a barbell and want to start with safe technique and a real plan — not guesswork.

The Spinning-Wheels Lifter

You've been training for a year or more but progress has stalled, and you suspect your programming or technique is the culprit.

The Injury-Wary Starter

You want to get strong but you're cautious about form — and you need coaching that treats injury prevention as a priority, not a footnote.

The Busy Professional

Your schedule is unpredictable and you need a flexible, efficient approach that keeps delivering results even when life gets in the way.

The Gym-Curious Woman

You've been told the weights section 'isn't for you' — this school gives you the knowledge and confidence to walk in and own it.

The Self-Taught Tinkerer

You've watched the videos and read the articles, but want one coherent, evidence-based framework that ties it all together.

Dave Idell

If you've ever walked out of a gym session feeling like you probably did something wrong — or worse, walked in not knowing where to start — I want you to know that's not a you problem. The fitness industry has done a remarkable job of making strength training feel complicated, gatekept, and vaguely dangerous. It's none of those things. But nobody handed you a clear map, and that's what I want to change.

I built Lift Fundamentals because the gap I see most often isn't motivation — it's understanding. People who are genuinely committed to getting stronger, but who are working from incomplete information: a routine that isn't structured around progressive overload, technique that nobody ever properly explained, a vague sense that they should probably eat more protein but no idea how much. The result is months — sometimes years — of effort that doesn't translate into real progress. That's a solvable problem, and solving it is what this school is for.

Here's what I believe: if you understand why something works, you'll actually do it — and you'll do it better. So we don't just teach you how to squat, we teach you what your body is doing during the squat and why each cue matters. We don't just hand you a programme, we walk you through the logic of frequency, volume, and intensity so you can read your own training and make smart decisions. Knowledge is the thing that makes every other piece stick.

The curriculum covers everything that actually moves the needle: technique on the four lifts that give you the most return on effort, programming built on progressive overload, the nutrition basics that support muscle growth without requiring a spreadsheet, and the recovery habits — sleep above all — that are where strength is genuinely built. Then we bring it together with simple tracking systems and a clear framework for progressing over time, including when life throws your schedule off.

This isn't a six-week challenge you white-knuckle through and then abandon. It's the foundation you build once and keep building on. If you're ready to stop guessing and start understanding, I'd love to coach you through it.
