Building the Reading Foundation
Before students can analyze stories, they need a shared understanding of what comprehension means and the daily habits that make it stick. This opening module builds the mindset, vocabulary, and routine that anchor every skill taught afterward — ensuring no child enters the story-elements work without the right frame of reference.
- 1.1What Does It Mean to Understand a Story?Included
- 1.2Listening Comprehension: The Gateway SkillIncluded
- 1.3Setting Up the Daily 10-Minute Reading RoutineIncluded
Story Elements: Characters, Settings, and Problems
With a comprehension mindset and daily routine in place, students now learn to identify the structural building blocks of every story. Mastering character, setting, and problem/solution gives children a reliable lens through which to enter any picture book or early reader — and directly supports the retelling and questioning skills taught later.
- 2.1Who's in the Story? Meeting CharactersIncluded
- 2.2Where and When? Exploring SettingsIncluded
- 2.3What's the Problem? Identifying Problem and SolutionIncluded
Predicting and Questioning: Thinking Before and During Reading
Active readers engage with a text before and during reading, not just after. This module teaches students to make evidence-based predictions, ask and answer the five key comprehension questions, and pause to monitor their own understanding — metacognitive habits that sharpen every subsequent reading encounter.
- 3.1Making Predictions: What Do You Think Will Happen?Included
- 3.2Asking and Answering the Big Five: Who, What, Where, When, WhyIncluded
- 3.3Thinking While Reading: Stop, Think, and WonderIncluded
Main Idea and Key Details: Finding What Matters Most
Students now apply their story-element and questioning skills to identify the central message or topic of a text and distinguish supporting details from peripheral information. Two additional lessons have been added to address the prerequisite of distinguishing topic from main idea and to give students sufficient guided practice before independent application — closing the gap in the original draft.
- 4.1Topic vs. Main Idea: What's the Difference?Included
- 4.2What Is This Mostly About? Introducing Main IdeaIncluded
- 4.3Details That Matter: Supporting the Main IdeaIncluded
Retelling Stories: Beginning, Middle, and End
Students synthesize everything learned — story elements, sequencing, and key details — to retell stories orally and in writing. The module deliberately scaffolds from visual organizers to oral retelling to written retelling, matching the developmental progression of K-2 learners. A lesson on using transition/sequence words has been added to bridge the gap between story mapping and fluent oral retelling.
- 5.1Story Maps: Organizing What HappenedIncluded
- 5.2Sequence Words: Telling Stories in OrderIncluded
- 5.3Retelling Out Loud: Using Sequence WordsIncluded
- 5.4Written Retells: From Talking to WritingIncluded
Growing as a Reader: Putting It All Together
The culminating module brings all six comprehension skills into a unified, self-directed practice. Students reflect on their growth, apply the full toolkit independently, and build the book-selection and self-monitoring habits needed to sustain comprehension development beyond the course — including an explicit celebration and assessment lesson absent from the original draft.
- 6.1The Full Comprehension Toolkit in ActionIncluded
- 6.2Choosing Books That Grow With YouIncluded
- 6.3Celebrating Growth and Reflecting as a ReaderIncluded

Ursula Toles
If you've ever watched a child finish a book and then struggle to tell you a single thing that happened in it — you already know the problem this program solves.
Reading comprehension doesn't come automatically. Kids can learn every letter sound, blend every word on the page, and still stare back at you blankly when you ask, "So what was the story about?" That moment can feel frustrating — for them and for you. It's not that they're behind. It's that no one has shown them how to think about a story while they're reading it.
That's exactly what Education Zone is built to do. We start at the very beginning — what it actually means to understand something you read — and then we build skill by skill, story by story. Characters. Settings. Problems. Predictions. The Big Five questions. Main idea. Retelling from beginning to middle to end. Every concept is introduced gently, practiced playfully, and then put together into a full comprehension toolkit your child will carry into every book they ever read.
The daily 20-minute routine is the heartbeat of this program. I designed it that way on purpose. Because consistency beats intensity every single time with young readers. Twenty focused minutes — a short story, a question or two, a quick retell — done regularly, will do more for your child's reading growth than a single marathon session ever could. And you'll know exactly how to run it from the very first week.
Here's what I want you to take away: you don't need to be a reading specialist to raise a confident, curious reader. You just need the right questions to ask, the right moments to pause, and a simple structure to lean on. This program gives you all three. Come in at whatever level your child is at right now — we'll grow from there together.
I can't wait to celebrate the moment your child looks up from a book and says, "I know what it was mostly about!" That moment is closer than you think. Let's go get it.
