1

The Science of Happiness (Not What You Think)

Establishes the empirical foundation of the course. Students confront the gap between intuitive beliefs about happiness and what decades of psychological research actually show, and learn the critical distinction between hedonic and eudaimonic well-being — the bedrock for everything that follows.

  • 1.1Why Your Happiness Intuitions Are Usually WrongIncluded
  • 1.2What the Research Actually Says: Proven Drivers of Lasting SatisfactionIncluded
  • 1.3Hedonic vs. Eudaimonic Happiness — and Why You Need BothIncluded
2

Auditing Your Life with the PERMA Framework

Translates the science into a structured diagnostic. Students apply Seligman's PERMA model (Positive Emotion, Engagement, Relationships, Meaning, Accomplishment) as a rigorous audit tool across every major life domain — work, relationships, and sense of purpose — revealing specific gaps and strengths to build on.

  • 2.1PERMA Unpacked: The Five Pillars in Your Real LifeIncluded
  • 2.2Work Through the PERMA Lens: Is Your Career Working For You?Included
  • 2.3Relationships, Meaning, and the Gaps Most People MissIncluded
3

Outsmarting the Biases That Wreck Life Choices

Addresses a critical prerequisite for good decision-making: understanding why our minds systematically mislead us when predicting what will make us happy. This module is deliberately placed before the decision frameworks module so students arrive at those tools already inoculated against the cognitive errors that would otherwise undermine them.

  • 3.1Affective Forecasting: Why You're Wrong About Your Future FeelingsIncluded
  • 3.2The Full Bias Toolkit: From FOMO to Social ComparisonIncluded
4

Decision Frameworks for Big Life and Career Choices

Equips students with concrete, structured tools for evaluating major decisions through a well-being lens. Building directly on the bias awareness from the previous module, students learn how to reframe what a 'good decision' means, apply a well-being decision framework to real choices, and clarify the personal values that should be anchoring every major move.

  • 4.1Redefining 'Good Decisions': A Well-Being Decision FrameworkIncluded
  • 4.2Values Clarification: Building Choices on BedrockIncluded
  • 4.3Career Pivots and Life Redesigns: Applying Science to the Big MovesIncluded
5

Designing Your Happiness Portfolio

Shifts from diagnosis and decision-making to intentional design. Students learn to think of their well-being as a portfolio requiring deliberate balance across hedonic pleasure, eudaimonic purpose, and social connection — and develop the specific practices that fund each dimension of that portfolio.

  • 5.1The Happiness Portfolio Concept: Designing for BalanceIncluded
  • 5.2Positive Emotions by Design: Savouring, Gratitude, and Flow EngineeringIncluded
  • 5.3Social Connection as Infrastructure: Investing in the Highest-ROI AssetIncluded
6

Your 90-Day Happiness Action Plan

Synthesises everything into a concrete, measurable, and personally owned action plan. Students move from insight to implementation by designing habit systems that make happiness-raising behaviours automatic, then building and pressure-testing a full 90-day plan before launching it — ensuring the course drives real behavioural change, not just intellectual understanding.

  • 6.1Habit Architecture for Lasting HappinessIncluded
  • 6.2Building and Launching Your Personal 90-Day PlanIncluded

Who it's for

Is this you?

The Successful but Restless

You've hit the milestones and still feel the quiet 'is this it?' — the PERMA audit and bias modules are built exactly for this moment.

The Career Changer

You're weighing a pivot but don't want to leap on a hunch — the well-being decision framework gives you a rigorous, science-backed process for making that call.

The Chronic Optimizer

You track everything and research everything, but your well-being hasn't caught up — this course finally applies that same rigor to the question that actually matters.

The Mid-Life Re-Evaluator

A major birthday, a life event, or a slow creeping question has you reassessing — the values clarification and Happiness Portfolio modules give structure to what feels like chaos.

The Purpose-Seeker

You want meaning, not just comfort — the hedonic vs. eudaimonic framework and the social connection module help you build a life with genuine depth.

The Thoughtful Skeptic

You've rolled your eyes at self-help before — this course leads with the research, cites the studies, and earns every recommendation before asking you to act on it.

Dr. J Raymond ABK

I want to start with something that might sound a little strange coming from someone teaching a happiness course: I'm skeptical of most happiness advice too.

Not because the science isn't real — it absolutely is, and it's more rigorous and more actionable than most people realize. But because somewhere between the research journals and the self-help shelves, something gets lost. The nuance gets sanded off. The uncomfortable findings get softened. And what's left is a set of warm-sounding ideas that feel reassuring and change almost nothing.

If you've picked up those books, attended the talks, maybe even done the gratitude journals — and still found yourself at 32 or 38 or 44 quietly wondering whether you're living the right life — I don't think the problem is you. I think you were given a watered-down version of the science and asked to just believe harder. That's not good enough, and you know it.

What I built this course to do is different. We start with what the research actually says — including the parts that challenge your intuitions, like the evidence on affective forecasting (you are genuinely, systematically wrong about what will make you happy in the future, and I'll show you exactly how). We use the PERMA framework not as a motivational poster but as a diagnostic tool to audit your real life — your career, your relationships, your sense of meaning — and locate where the gaps actually are. And then we build something: a decision-making framework for the big choices, a Happiness Portfolio that balances pleasure and purpose and connection in a way that's specific to you, and a 90-day plan with real habits and real checkpoints.

I ask uncomfortable questions in this course. Not to be provocative, but because the uncomfortable questions are usually the ones that move the needle. What are you actually optimizing for — and is it correlated with what you say you value? What would the research predict about the life choice you're currently weighing? Where are you letting social comparison or FOMO quietly steer the wheel?

You don't have to have your answers figured out before you start. You just have to be willing to look honestly. If you are, I think this course will give you some of the most useful intellectual tools you'll ever apply to your own life. Come in curious, be willing to be challenged, and let's build something real together.
