What you'll learn

What you'll be able to do

  • Explain the difference between DOT and non-DOT testing, who regulates each, and when each set of rules applies
  • Walk through a complete urine specimen collection — from ID verification to sealing, initialing, and shipping — without errors
  • Correctly complete a paper Chain of Custody Form (CCF), identifying every copy's purpose and every box's requirement
  • Identify the six DOT collection reason-types and the five non-DOT employer test types, and handle each scenario appropriately
  • Set up a legal, insured mobile collection business — LLC, EIN, pricing, scheduling, and subcontractor approval — ready for first clients

Welcome to the Industry

Orients the learner to the mobile drug and alcohol testing profession before any technical content is introduced. Sets expectations for the course, establishes the MDTFinder brand disclaimer (overview only; not a substitute for DOT-mandated collector training), and gives learners a clear picture of what the job actually looks like day-to-day so they can self-qualify before investing further time.

  • 1.1Introduction to Mobile Drug & Alcohol TestingIncluded
2

Drug Testing Basics

Builds the regulatory and scientific foundation every collector must have before touching a specimen or a form. Learners must understand the DOT/non-DOT distinction and the pros and cons of each specimen type before they can correctly execute a collection or advise an employer. This module is intentionally sequenced second so all later technical modules (DOT Collections, Non-DOT Collections, Alcohol Testing, Collection Process) rest on a solid conceptual base.

  • 2.1DOT vs. Non-DOT TestingIncluded
  • 2.2Drug Testing ModalitiesIncluded
3

DOT Collections

Covers the federally mandated collection reason-types, the special protocols that require observed collections, and the shy bladder procedure — in that order, because reason-types establish context, observed collections are a subset of specific reason-types, and shy bladder is a sub-protocol within any collection. Directly maps to target outcome four (identify and handle all six DOT reason-types) and provides the compliance backbone for the collection process taught in Module 6.

  • 3.1DOT Collection Reason TypesIncluded
  • 3.2Observed CollectionsIncluded
  • 3.3Shy Bladder ProtocolIncluded
4

Non-DOT Collections

Covers employer-driven testing programs that operate outside federal DOT mandates. Sequenced after DOT Collections so learners can compare and contrast from a position of knowledge. Includes the five employer test types and the critical rapid-testing workflow — particularly the non-negative result protocol, which is one of the most commonly mishandled situations new collectors face.

  • 4.1Non-DOT Employer Testing TypesIncluded
  • 4.2Rapid Testing & Laboratory ConfirmationIncluded
5

Alcohol Testing

Provides a focused but complete overview of breath and saliva alcohol testing as it applies to both DOT and non-DOT programs. Sequenced before the Collection Process module because alcohol testing uses different devices, forms, and procedures than urine drug testing, and learners need to understand both streams before the end-to-end job walkthrough in Module 9. Covers the two-step DOT alcohol testing process, waiting periods, and the collector's documentation obligations.

  • 5.1Alcohol Testing BasicsIncluded
6

The Collection Process

The technical core of the course. Teaches the complete step-by-step urine specimen collection procedure, then the paper CCF (box by box), then the electronic CCF — in that deliberate sequence, because learners must understand the physical collection workflow before they can correctly complete the documentation that records it. All three lessons directly map to target outcomes two and three. This module is the most activity-intensive because procedural fluency only comes from repeated practice.

  • 6.1Step-by-Step Urine Specimen CollectionIncluded
  • 6.2The Paper Chain of Custody Form (CCF)Included
  • 6.3Electronic CCF OverviewIncluded
7

Equipment & Supplies

Ensures learners know exactly what physical equipment and supplies they need before accepting their first job — and how to organize it in a mobile operation. Sequenced after the Collection Process module so learners can directly connect each supply item to the step in which it is used. Prevents the costly and embarrassing mistake of arriving at a collection site without critical materials.

  • 7.1Building Your Mobile Collection KitIncluded
8

Starting Your Business

Provides the legal, financial, and sales foundation learners need to operate as an independent mobile collection business rather than just a trained collector. Sequenced after all technical content so learners are building a business around skills they now understand. Directly maps to target outcomes five and six. Three lessons are preserved in full — Business Setup, Finding Clients, and Subcontracting — with strengthened descriptions and activities to close the gap between conceptual knowledge and executable action.

  • 8.1Business Setup EssentialsIncluded
  • 8.2Finding Your First ClientsIncluded
  • 8.3Working as a SubcontractorIncluded
9

Your First Collection: Start to Pay

Synthesizes everything learned in the course into an end-to-end simulation of a real collection job — from dispatch notification through invoicing and payment — followed by a curated resource directory and the final assessment. This capstone module is sequenced last because it requires fluency in all prior content. The two-lesson structure (full walkthrough + resources and assessment) ensures learners finish with both practical confidence and a reference system for their ongoing career.

  • 9.1Full Job Walkthrough: Dispatch to InvoiceIncluded
  • 9.2Resources, Next Steps & Final AssessmentIncluded

Vertical Identity

If you've been circling the mobile drug and alcohol testing industry — reading threads, downloading forms, trying to figure out where to even start — I know exactly where you are. The opportunity is obvious. Flexible hours, consistent demand from trucking, construction, staffing, and healthcare clients, and the ability to run a real business as an independent contractor. But then you open a DOT regulation document and suddenly it feels like you need a law degree just to take a urine sample.

That's the gap this course exists to close.

I built MDTFinder Collector Essentials because the information new collectors actually need — plain-English explanations of DOT and non-DOT rules, a procedure you can follow step-by-step in the field, and honest guidance on setting up a business that gets you paid — was scattered, incomplete, or buried under language written for compliance officers, not working collectors. This course gives you everything in one place, in the order it actually matters, with the level of detail that makes a real difference when you're standing in a client's parking lot for the first time.

Here's what I want you to understand: the collection process itself is learnable. Verifying donor ID, walking through the specimen collection, completing every box on the Chain of Custody Form, knowing when an observed collection is required, handling a shy bladder situation — these are skills, and skills can be taught clearly. The regulations that govern DOT testing exist for real safety reasons, and once you understand the logic behind them, they stop feeling overwhelming and start feeling like a framework you can work confidently inside of.

The business piece is just as important, and it's the part most training skips. Knowing how to collect a specimen means nothing if you don't know how to get approved as a subcontractor, price your services, source clients across TPA and direct channels, or send an invoice correctly. This course walks you through all of it — including a full job walkthrough from dispatch to payment so your first real collection doesn't catch you off guard.

Whether you're coming from healthcare and looking to pivot, or you're completely new to the industry and building from scratch, this course is designed to get you from curious to ready. Not eventually — this weekend.

Come in, learn the work, and let's get you to your first client.
