Foundations of Learning: UDL, SEL & IB Learner Profile
This foundational module is deliberately sequenced first to establish the mindsets, frameworks, and virtual-school skills every student needs before engaging academic content. It introduces the IB Learner Profile as a personal compass, builds core social-emotional competencies, equips learners with UDL self-advocacy tools, and sets norms for digital citizenship and academic integrity — ensuring all subsequent modules rest on a shared, inclusive scaffold.

Language Arts & Literacy Across Grade Bands
This module delivers rigorous, Common Core–aligned ELA instruction across all grade bands (Pre-K–12), integrating IB Language A and Language & Literature frameworks for Grades 9–12. It is sequenced after the Foundations module so students bring established SEL, UDL, and IB Learner Profile lenses to every literacy task. Foreign Language Immersion Pathways are embedded here as IB Language B/ab initio pathways, explicitly covering the prerequisite of academic language development before students encounter complex disciplinary texts in later modules.
- 2.1Reading for Meaning: Close Reading, Inference & Textual EvidenceIncluded

Mathematics: Standards for Mathematical Practice & MESA Integration
This module delivers rigorous, vertically aligned mathematics instruction from Pre-K through Grade 12, fully anchored in the eight Standards for Mathematical Practice (SMP) and Common Core State Standards for Mathematics (CCSSM). MESA (Mathematics, Engineering, Science Achievement) engineering challenges are woven throughout to make abstract mathematics tangible and career-connected. IB Mathematics (Analysis & Approaches; Applications & Interpretation) and AP Calculus pathways serve Grades 11–12. The module is sequenced after Language Arts so students bring academic discussion, academic writing, and argumentation skills to mathematical discourse and justification.
- 3.1Mathematical Mindset & the Standards for Mathematical PracticeIncluded
- 3.2Number Sense to Algebra: Core Content Progression (Pre-K–8)Included
- 3.3Algebra, Geometry & Precalculus (Grades 8–11)Included

Sciences: Inquiry, MESA Engineering & IB Group 4
This module delivers a coherent K–12 science education through the three-dimensional lens of phenomena-based inquiry (NGSS-informed), IB Group 4 subject frameworks (Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Environmental Systems & Societies), and MESA engineering design challenges. It is sequenced after Mathematics so students bring quantitative reasoning, data literacy, and graphing skills to laboratory work and experimental design. Lab safety is treated as a non-negotiable prerequisite lesson before any experimental activity begins.
- 4.1Scientific Inquiry, Lab Safety & the IB Scientific MethodIncluded
- 4.2Life Science & Biology (Grades K–12 Progression)Included

Social Studies, History & Global Citizenship
This module delivers a rigorous K–12 social studies education integrating historical thinking skills, geographic and economic literacy, civic competency, and IB Individuals & Societies (I&S) and Theory of Knowledge (TOK) frameworks. It is sequenced after Sciences so students bring systems thinking and evidence-based reasoning to the analysis of human systems. A gap identified in the original draft — an explicit Economics and Financial Literacy unit ensuring college and career readiness — has been added as a standalone lesson. The TOK bridge is expanded beyond a brief mention into a full lesson to ensure IB Diploma coherence.
- 5.1Historical Thinking & Primary Source AnalysisIncluded
- 5.2Geography, Economics & Global SystemsIncluded
- 5.3Government, Civics & Active CitizenshipIncluded
- 5.4Theory of Knowledge (TOK): Bridging Knowledge Across DisciplinesIncluded
- 5.5IB Individuals & Societies Internal Assessment & TOK BridgeIncluded
Challenge-Based Learning, Odyssey of the Mind & Innovation Capstone
This culminating module integrates all prior learning into an authentic, high-stakes, interdisciplinary experience. It is deliberately sequenced last because it requires the full toolkit built across every preceding module — IB frameworks, SEL competencies, UDL self-advocacy, disciplinary knowledge, and research skills. The module delivers Challenge-Based Learning (CBL) methodology, Odyssey of the Mind (OotM) creative problem-solving, the IB-aligned Capstone Portfolio, TAG extensions, IB CAS completion, and college/career readiness credentials. A gap in the original draft — an explicit IB CAS (Creativity, Activity, Service) completion and reflection lesson — is added here to ensure IB Diploma coherence.

Pauline Smith EdD
I know the conversation you've been having with yourself late at night — the one where you wonder whether you're doing right by your child.
Maybe traditional school isn't working the way it should. Maybe your learner is bored, or struggling, or bouncing between schools because your family's life simply doesn't fit the zip-code-and-bell-schedule model. Maybe your child has a learning difference that the system keeps promising to accommodate but never quite does. Or maybe they're so far ahead that you're watching them coast when they should be soaring. Whatever brought you here, I want you to know: you're not asking for too much. A rigorous, accredited, genuinely personalized education is not a fantasy — it's exactly what Meridian Academy was built to deliver.
At Meridian, we've built every course from the ground up around three convictions. First: that high standards and deep support are not in tension — a student can receive fully differentiated, UDL-designed instruction and pursue IB-aligned, college-credit-worthy coursework in the same school year. Second: that social-emotional development isn't a "soft" add-on — it's the infrastructure that makes academic growth possible, which is why SEL competencies run through every course, every grade band, every day. And third: that the best way to prove you've learned something is to use it — which is why our Challenge-Based Learning framework and Odyssey of the Mind methodology ask students to investigate real problems, design original solutions, and present their thinking to real audiences, not just bubble in an answer.
I want to be honest with you about what this school is — and isn't. Meridian is not a shortcut to a diploma. Our courses are intellectually demanding, scaffolded carefully across grade bands from concrete story-driven learning in Pre-K all the way to Socratic seminars and IB Theory of Knowledge in high school, but demanding nonetheless. What we promise is that the rigor is always purposeful, the support is always present, and no student is left to figure it out alone. Your child will be seen — their specific strengths, their specific needs, their specific ceiling — and the curriculum will flex to meet them there.
For high schoolers especially, I want you to see what's waiting at the finish line: an IB-aligned academic portfolio, documented Creativity, Activity & Service reflections, and the coursework record that competitive universities recognize. Not just a piece of paper, but evidence — a body of work that shows exactly what your graduate knows and can do.
If you've been searching for an academic home that holds your child to a high standard and actually knows who they are, I'd love for Meridian to be that place. Come explore the curriculum, walk through a sample course, and let's find out together whether this is the right fit for your family. The door is open.
