Read the New Testament like a scholar, receive it like a disciple

Maybe you have been reading the New Testament for years — decades, even — and you love it. But somewhere along the way you started to sense that you were only standing at the shoreline. You could see the water, but you did not know how deep it went, or what currents ran beneath the surface. You picked up a commentary once and felt lost within three pages. You sat in a Bible study and wondered why the same passage seemed to mean something different to everyone in the room. You sensed, rightly, that there had to be a better way.

That is exactly the gap this school exists to close.

I designed New Testament Foundation because I believe that the tools of serious biblical scholarship are not the exclusive property of seminaries. They belong to every person who wants to read these texts honestly and deeply — the Sunday school teacher who wants to stop guessing, the small group leader who wants to give her group something more than opinions, the lifelong churchgoer who has always suspected there was more beneath the surface, and yes, the honest skeptic who wants to know what these texts actually say before deciding what to do with them.

Here is what I know: context does not kill wonder — it multiplies it. When you understand that Matthew was writing for a community wrestling with its relationship to the Jewish tradition, the structure of his Gospel suddenly becomes a living argument, not just a collection of stories. When you grasp that Paul's letter to the Galatians was written in a state of urgent alarm, every sharp word comes into focus. When you see that Revelation is a piece of Jewish apocalyptic literature addressed to persecuted first-century churches, it stops being a puzzle to decode and becomes a letter of blazing, defiant hope. That is the kind of reading this school teaches.

We will move carefully through all twenty-seven books — their historical world, their literary design, their theological message, and their place in the larger story the whole New Testament tells together. And then, in the final unit, we will turn everything we have learned into practice: how to interpret a passage faithfully, how to avoid the most common mistakes readers make, and how to lead others into the text with clarity and confidence.

I will not pretend this is light reading. Rigorous engagement with these ancient texts takes effort, and I will ask for yours. But I promise to meet that effort with teaching that is as warm as it is careful — because I have never forgotten that the reason we study these words is not to master them, but to be shaped by them.
