A note from your teacher
Leigh Baumann
If you've ever stood at the edge of a court thinking, I want to do right by these kids but I'm not totally sure I know how—this letter is for you.
Maybe you're a first-time volunteer who got voluntold into coaching because your recreational league needed someone. Maybe you're a PE teacher adding pickleball to your curriculum and realizing the sport has its own language and rhythm. Maybe you're a recreation department staffer running programs for kids from age 4 to age 17, all in the same week. Whatever your situation, you care enough to be here, and that already puts you ahead.
Here's the thing: knowing how to play pickleball and knowing how to coach pickleball to kids are two very different skill sets. Great coaches don't just demo the dink and tell kids to go practice. They understand that a 6-year-old and a 16-year-old learn in fundamentally different ways. They know how to hold a group's attention when energy is flagging at the end of practice. They can spot a concussion, handle a conflict between teammates, navigate a tough conversation with a frustrated parent, and still make the whole thing feel like fun. That's what this course is designed to give you.
I built Put Me in Coach because I kept meeting passionate, well-meaning coaches who were winging it—not because they were lazy, but because no one had ever handed them a roadmap. So that's what this is: a practical, honest, step-by-step certification that covers everything from the rules of the game to mandatory reporting responsibilities, from running a drill that actually works for 8-year-olds to coaching an athlete who processes the world differently than most of their teammates. Every lesson is grounded in real child development research and translated into plain language you can actually use at your next practice.
You don't need to be a former pro or a credentialed educator to coach kids well. You need the right foundation, the right tools, and the confidence that comes from knowing you've done the work. That's what I'm here to help you build. I'm glad you're here—let's get to work.
