Know Your Starting Line: Diagnostic & Personalized Path

Students begin their quest by discovering exactly where they are as readers. An adaptive diagnostic assessment measures Lexile level, comprehension depth, and vocabulary knowledge to generate a personalized learning path. Students then translate their results into concrete, measurable growth goals — giving every learner a clear 'why' before the journey begins. Standards: CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.CCRA.R.10; FL B.E.S.T. ELA.6–8.R.1.1.

First Reads: Narrative Text & Core Comprehension

Students dive into fiction with purpose and skill. This module uses an anchor narrative text — a grade-appropriate short story leveled within the 770–1010L range — to build the foundational comprehension skills every reader needs: theme, inference, and evidence-based response writing. A Check-Point quiz closes the module to confirm mastery before students move forward. Standards: CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.6–8.1, RL.6–8.2, RL.6–8.3, RL.6–8.6; FL B.E.S.T. ELA.6–8.R.1.1, ELA.6–8.R.1.2, ELA.6–8.R.1.3.

Informational Intelligence: Non-Fiction Comprehension

Students apply and extend their comprehension skills to informational texts — the text type that dominates standardized assessments and academic reading across all subjects. This module uses an anchor informational article leveled within the 770–1010L range to build skills in main idea identification, author's purpose and perspective, and text structure analysis. A Check-Point quiz closes the module. Standards: CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.6–8.1, RI.6–8.2, RI.6–8.3, RI.6–8.5, RI.6–8.6, RI.6–8.8; FL B.E.S.T. ELA.6–8.R.2.1, ELA.6–8.R.2.2, ELA.6–8.R.2.3, ELA.6–8.R.2.4.

Word Power: Vocabulary Mastery

Students build the vocabulary toolkit needed to independently decode unfamiliar words in any text — a foundational skill that directly improves Lexile level and comprehension. This module is intentionally placed after the two comprehension modules so students immediately apply new vocabulary strategies to texts they have already encountered. The three-lesson sequence moves from context (sentence-level) to morphology (word-level) to academic application (cross-disciplinary), building a cumulative word-learning system targeting 300+ Tier 2 academic words. Standards: CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.6–8.4, L.6–8.5, L.6–8.6; FL B.E.S.T. ELA.6–8.V.1.1, ELA.6–8.V.1.2, ELA.6–8.V.1.3.

Strategic Reader Toolkit: Annotating, Summarizing & Questioning

Students acquire and practice a powerful, repeatable three-step reading strategy — Annotate, Summarize, Question (ASQ) — that can be applied to any complex text in any subject. This module is placed after comprehension and vocabulary modules so students have sufficient textual knowledge and word-attack strategies to annotate and summarize with confidence. All three strategy lessons use both narrative and informational texts, integrating reading type practice with strategy instruction. Standards: CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.CCRA.R.1, R.2, R.10; FL B.E.S.T. ELA.6–8.R.1.1, ELA.6–8.R.2.1.

  • 5.1Mark It Up: Annotation as a Thinking ToolIncluded
  • 5.2Say It in a Sentence: Summarizing Without Losing the MeaningIncluded
  • 5.3Ask Like a Thinker: Self-Questioning Before, During & After ReadingIncluded
  • 5.4Check-Point 4: Strategic Reading Mastery QuizIncluded

Test-Smart: Strategies for Standardized ELA Success

Students learn the metacognitive and procedural strategies that separate proficient test-takers from struggling ones — not as tricks, but as disciplined cognitive tools grounded in the reading and vocabulary skills built throughout the course. This module is deliberately placed last so that every test-taking strategy taught is immediately connected to skills students have already mastered: text evidence, vocabulary, annotation, summarizing, and questioning. A cumulative final Check-Point closes the course and generates an updated Lexile estimate and skill growth report. Standards: CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.CCRA.R.1–10; FL B.E.S.T. ELA.6–8.R.1.1–R.2.4.

  • 6.1Prompt Autopsy: Breaking Down Any Test QuestionIncluded

If your middle schooler dreads reading — or you've watched a capable kid freeze up the moment a test packet lands on their desk — I want you to know: that's not a permanent state. That's a skills gap waiting to be closed. And closing it is exactly what Right Track Quest is built to do.

I designed this course because middle school is the make-or-break window for reading. The texts get harder, the vocabulary jumps, the tests get longer, and suddenly kids who felt fine in fifth grade are falling behind — not because they aren't smart, but because nobody handed them the right tools. Right Track Quest is those tools, organized into a clear, encouraging path that any 6th, 7th, or 8th grader can walk.

Here's how it works: we start by finding your student's real starting line with an adaptive diagnostic — no judgment, just information. Then we build, module by module: how to read fiction deeply, how to crack non-fiction for what the author is really saying, how to own new vocabulary instead of guessing and hoping, how to annotate a complex text like a thinker (not just a highlighter), and finally, how to walk into a standardized ELA test with a specific, repeatable game plan. Five Check-Point quizzes track mastery at every stage so nobody moves on before they're ready.

I know some students come in having been told — by tests, by grades, by their own inner voice — that reading just "isn't for them." I built every lesson to push back against that story. The tone is upbeat. The strategies are presented as puzzles to crack, not hurdles to clear. And every small win — a vocabulary word owned, an inference nailed, a prompt decoded — is worth celebrating, because those wins stack up.

Whether you're a parent looking for a rigorous at-home program, a teacher searching for a standards-aligned supplement, or a student ready to finally feel confident with a text in front of you: this is your quest. I'm glad you found it. Let's get started.
