Reading Comprehension & Critical Analysis
Students in grades 6–12 develop the skills to engage deeply with complex texts across genres and disciplines. This module moves from foundational active reading habits through higher-order critical analysis, ensuring every skill is scaffolded before the next is introduced. Mastery here underpins success in every other module.
- 1.1Active Reading & Annotation StrategiesIncluded
- 1.2Finding Main Idea, Theme & Author's PurposeIncluded
- 1.3Making Inferences & Drawing ConclusionsIncluded
- 1.4Analyzing Argument, Rhetoric & Point of ViewIncluded
Vocabulary Building & Word Mastery
A rich, flexible vocabulary is the engine of reading comprehension, precise writing, and test performance. This module teaches students not just individual words but reusable decoding strategies — morphemic analysis, context clues, and academic register — so they can independently unlock new vocabulary for life. Placed after Reading Comprehension so students immediately apply new strategies to real texts they have already encountered.
- 2.1Cracking Words with Roots, Prefixes & SuffixesIncluded
- 2.2Using Context Clues to Define Unknown WordsIncluded
- 2.3Academic Vocabulary for Reading & WritingIncluded
- 2.4Vocabulary for Connotation, Tone & PrecisionIncluded
Grammar, Punctuation & Style
Correctness and clarity in writing begin with an internalized understanding of how English sentences are built and how punctuation guides meaning. This module is intentionally sequenced after reading and vocabulary work so students have rich textual examples to draw from, and before the writing module so grammar knowledge immediately transfers to their own compositions. Lessons move from sentence-level structure outward to style and voice.
- 3.1Sentence Structure: From Fragments to FlowIncluded
- 3.2Punctuation That Works: Commas, Semicolons & MoreIncluded
- 3.3Subject-Verb Agreement, Pronoun Use & Modifier PlacementIncluded
- 3.4Style & Clarity: Cutting Wordiness and Strengthening VoiceIncluded
Essay Writing & Academic Composition
With strong reading, vocabulary, and grammar skills now in place, students focus on producing polished written work. This module guides students through the full writing process and across the three essay types most demanded in school and on standardized tests — argumentative, informational/analytical, and literary. A prerequisite lesson on evidence and citations is added to fill a gap in the original draft.
- 4.1The Writing Process: Plan, Draft, Revise, PolishIncluded
- 4.2Thesis Statements & Essay StructureIncluded
- 4.3Using Evidence & Integrating SourcesIncluded
- 4.4Argumentative & Persuasive EssaysIncluded
- 4.5Informational, Analytical & Literary EssaysIncluded
Standardized Test Preparation (SAT, ACT & State Assessments)
Students apply all previously developed reading, vocabulary, grammar, and writing skills in the high-stakes context of standardized testing. This module is placed last in the academic track because it is most effective when students have genuine underlying skills to draw upon — test strategies amplify skill; they do not replace it. Lessons cover test format familiarity, section-specific strategies, time management, and test-day mindset.
- 5.1Know the Test: Format, Timing & Question TypesIncluded
- 5.2Reading Section Strategies: Precision Under PressureIncluded
- 5.3Writing & Language Section Strategies: Editing for PointsIncluded
- 5.4Essay & Extended Response Strategies for High-Stakes TestsIncluded
- 5.5Test-Day Mindset, Time Management & Strategy SynthesisIncluded
ESL Track: Everyday English Fluency for Adults
Designed for adult English language learners, this track builds practical, communicative fluency for everyday life, work, and community participation. Lessons prioritize authentic, immediately usable language over abstract grammar rules, and are sequenced from foundational grammar and conversation through reading, writing, vocabulary, and independent fluency. Prerequisites from the academic track (grammar, vocabulary strategies) are re-taught here with adult-contextualized materials and lower assumed literacy in English.
- 6.1Building Blocks: Everyday Grammar in Real ContextsIncluded
- 6.2Speaking with Confidence: Conversation & PronunciationIncluded
- 6.3Reading & Writing for Daily LifeIncluded
- 6.4Vocabulary for Work, Community & Social LifeIncluded
- 6.5Fluency & Independence: Putting It All TogetherIncluded

Lynette Munich
If Reading and Writing has ever felt like subjects you just survive — rather than one you actually master — I want you to know that feeling is more common than you think, and it's exactly what this school is built to change.
Maybe you're a student who can get through a reading passage but isn't quite sure what the author is really arguing. Maybe you know your essay needs a stronger thesis, but nobody's ever shown you exactly how to build one. Maybe you're an adult who speaks English every day but still hesitates before sending an email at work, or freezes up in a conversation and wonders if you'll ever feel truly fluent. Wherever you're starting from, that uncertainty is real — and it's fixable.
Here's what I've come to believe after teaching Reading and Writing to learners at every stage: most people don't struggle with it because they're not smart enough. They struggle because they were never given the right tools in the right order. A grammar rule without context doesn't stick. A vocabulary list without strategy doesn't transfer. A test-taking tip without practice doesn't perform under pressure. Every lesson in this school is designed around that principle — give you the tool, show you exactly how it works, and let you practice it in a way that actually builds skill.
What you'll find here is a complete, structured path through every skill that matters: reading with purpose and annotation, writing essays that are clear and well-argued, building vocabulary that expands with you, correcting grammar with confidence, and — for those preparing for the SAT, ACT, or state tests — walking into exam day with a real strategy, not just hope. ESL learners have their own dedicated track, where everyday English is built from the ground up in contexts that mirror real life: conversations, workplaces, communities.
I won't talk down to you, and I won't rush you. Every lesson is as warm as it is rigorous, because learning a language — or relearning it on your own terms — deserves both. I'm glad you're here. Let's get to work.
