A note from your teacher
Leigh Baumann
Here's something nobody tells you when you agree to coach a youth softball team: the hardest parts have almost nothing to do with softball.
The hardest parts are the moments like this — the kid who shuts down when you raise your voice even slightly, the parent who corners you after every game, the player who shows up in the same dirty uniform every week and something just feels off, the practice where you planned for an hour of drills and lost the whole group after fifteen minutes. These are the moments that make coaches second-guess themselves, burn out, or quietly walk away after one season.
I built Put Me in Coach because I've lived every one of those moments, and I've watched too many well-meaning coaches struggle through them alone because no one ever gave them a real roadmap. Not just a rulebook — a roadmap. The kind that covers not only how to teach a proper throwing stance, but how to communicate that to a 7-year-old with sensory sensitivities, how to run a practice that keeps twenty kids engaged for a full hour, how to respond calmly and correctly if someone gets a hard knock to the head, and how to recognize when a child in your care might need more than you can provide.
This curriculum is substantive because coaching kids requires substance. We cover the 20% of softball skills that actually determine the outcome of most games — so you're spending your limited practice time on what matters. We walk through how kids grow and what that means for how you teach at every age level. We dig into positive reinforcement frameworks that actually motivate, conflict resolution strategies you can use in the moment, and player rotation approaches that keep every athlete engaged — not just the ones with natural talent. We don't skip the hard topics: youth protection, mandatory reporting, safe boundaries, and abuse recognition are covered fully, practically, and without flinching, because these things are part of your job the moment you step into this role.
You don't have to have played college ball. You don't have to have coached before. You just have to care about the kids in front of you — and be willing to show up prepared. That's what this is here to help you do.
Come on in. Your team is waiting.
