Welcome to SPED Start Academy!
Stop Guessing. Start Leading.
Let me guess.
Someone handed you a classroom roster, a stack of IEPs, a list of deadlines, and a reassuring smile followed by those three little words: "You've got this!"
And just like that, you're officially a special education teacher. Now you're trying to figure out where to start, what you're supposed to do, and what you might already be forgetting. Maybe you're excited. Maybe you're overwhelmed. Or maybe you've spent more evenings than you'd like to admit Googling special education acronyms, trying to understand an IEP, or wondering,
"Am I really prepared for this?"
If that sounds familiar, you're exactly who I created SPED Start Academy for.
Trust Me, I Understand
I've spent more than 15 years working in special education, including Inclusion, Resource, Self-Contained, and Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHH) classrooms. I've supported students with a wide range of learning, behavioral, communication, and complex medical needs.
I've also watched talented, compassionate new teachers question their abilities and sometimes consider leaving the profession. Not because they didn't care. Not because they weren't capable. But because they were expected to know how to do a job they hadn't been fully taught how to do.
Here's what many teacher preparation programs don't explain: Learning how to teach and learning how to navigate special education are two very different things. Between IEPs, federal and state regulations, documentation, behavior plans, parent communication, and meeting deadlines, there's a lot to figure out.
And let's not forget, you're expected to actually teach in the middle of all that!
That's Why I Created SPED Start Academy
I wanted to create the practical, straightforward training I wish every new special education teacher had from day one.
Not another overwhelming professional development session filled with complicated terminology. Not another 75-slide presentation that leaves you with more questions than answers. But a place where you can learn what you need to know, understand why it matters, and begin putting that knowledge into practice. SPED Start Academy is a self-paced online course designed for alternatively certified teachers, career changers, and special education teachers in their first two years.
Through six easy-to-follow modules, we'll break down the essentials of special education, from understanding your first IEP to preparing to lead IEP meetings. You'll also have access to a 24/7 AI learning coach to help you review course concepts and work through those questions that seem to pop up after the school day ends. Learn at your own pace, revisit lessons when you need them, and build knowledge you can actually use in your classroom.
One More Thing Before We Begin. I'm going to be transparent with you.
Special education isn't always easy.
There will be difficult meetings, frustrated parents, confusing paperwork, and days when you wonder whether you're doing enough. As both an educator and a parent who understands what it's like to advocate for a child with complex needs, I can tell you that the work you do matters. You're not just managing paperwork or checking boxes. You're making decisions that affect real students and real families.
I can't promise this course will eliminate every challenge. But I do believe that the more you understand, the less you have to guess. You don't have to know everything on your first day. What you do need is a solid foundation, practical tools, and a willingness to keep learning. That's what I want to help you build. Whether you're preparing for your first classroom, surviving your first semester, or still finding your footing in year two, I'm glad you're here.
Your students deserve a supported, prepared teacher. And so do you.
