The curriculum

What's inside your school

6 modules · 18 lessons

1

Meet Your Machine & Sewing Toolkit

Students are introduced to the sewing machine and all essential tools before touching fabric. This foundational module ensures every learner can set up, operate, and troubleshoot their machine with confidence — a non-negotiable prerequisite for every skill that follows.

  • 1.1Anatomy of a Sewing MachineIncluded
  • 1.2Threading, Bobbins & First StitchesIncluded
  • 1.3Tension, Stitch Length & TroubleshootingIncluded
2

Fabric, Cutting & Seam Fundamentals

Before any project can succeed, students must be able to choose appropriate fabric, prepare it correctly, cut it accurately, and sew and finish clean seams. This module builds the precision habits — grain line, seam allowance, pressing — that separate polished results from sloppy ones.

  • 2.1Fabric 101 — Choosing, Preparing & MarkingIncluded
  • 2.2Cutting with ConfidenceIncluded
  • 2.3Sewing & Finishing SeamsIncluded
3

Reading Patterns & Planning Projects

Commercial patterns are the universal language of sewing, yet they intimidate most beginners. This module demystifies the pattern envelope, guide sheet, and tissue pieces so students can independently select, size, and lay out any beginner pattern — a critical prerequisite before the tote bag and garment projects. A new lesson on pattern tissue preparation has been added to close the gap between decoding symbols and actually using the tissue pieces on fabric.

  • 3.1Decoding a Pattern Envelope & Guide SheetIncluded
  • 3.2Measuring Yourself & Choosing Your SizeIncluded
  • 3.3Preparing & Tracing Pattern TissueIncluded
4

Essential Techniques — Curves, Hems & Closures

This technique module equips students with the core construction skills required in virtually every sewing project: navigating curves and corners, creating clean hems three ways, and installing the three most common closures. All skills are practiced in isolation on samples before they appear in real projects — ensuring students are never learning a new technique mid-project under pressure.

  • 4.1Sewing Curves & CornersIncluded
  • 4.2Hems — Three WaysIncluded
  • 4.3Zippers, Buttons & SnapsIncluded
5

First Real Project — The Lined Tote Bag

The tote bag is the ideal first complete project: it uses straight seams, curves, corners, and reinforced stitching, produces a functional item the student keeps, and builds the full project workflow — cut, mark, construct, press, finish — without the complexity of fit. A new lesson on handle construction is added to ensure this critical tote-bag element is explicitly taught rather than assumed.

  • 5.1Cutting & Prep for the Tote BagIncluded
  • 5.2Constructing the Handles & ExteriorIncluded
  • 5.3Lining, Pocket & Final AssemblyIncluded
6

Garment Project, Fitting & What Comes Next

Students apply every skill developed in the course to complete a simple garment — such as elastic-waist shorts, a pull-on skirt, or a relaxed top — from cutting to final press. Fitting and alteration skills are introduced in the context of the actual garment, and the module closes by equipping students to repair, alter, and independently continue learning — delivering the final course outcome of sewing self-sufficiency.

  • 6.1Garment Cutting, Interfacing & ConstructionIncluded
  • 6.2Fitting Basics & Simple AlterationsIncluded
  • 6.3Repairs, Alterations & Building Your Sewing LifeIncluded

Hey, I'm so glad you found your way here.

If you've spent any amount of time thinking "I really want to learn to sew" and then not knowing where to start — or starting and immediately feeling lost — I built this course for you. That feeling of staring at a sewing machine like it's a spaceship, or opening a pattern envelope and thinking "what does any of this mean?" is completely normal. It's also completely fixable. I know, because I've helped a lot of people move from exactly that place to sitting at their machine and actually making things they're proud of.

What I've learned from teaching people to sew is that most beginner resources skip too many steps. They assume you already know things, use terms without explaining them, and jump to the fun parts before you have a solid foundation. So when I designed Stitch Studio, I went back to the very beginning and thought carefully about the order in which things actually need to be taught. Week 1 is just you and your machine — no projects, no pressure, just getting comfortable and confident with the tool you'll use for everything. Each week after that adds one clear layer, so by the time you're cutting fabric for a real project, it doesn't feel scary. It feels like the obvious next step.

I also want to be honest with you about something: I'm not going to promise this is effortless. Sewing is a physical skill, and it takes a little practice to get your hands and your machine working together. But here's what I know for certain — every single person who slows down, follows the steps, and gives themselves permission to be a beginner gets there. The tote bag gets finished. The garment comes together. And that moment when you put on something you made yourself? It's genuinely one of the best feelings.

By the end of six weeks, I want you to be able to pick up any beginner pattern, size it to your body, choose your fabric, and work through it independently. Not just follow along with me — actually do it yourself. That's the whole point of Stitch Studio. Come as you are. We'll build the rest together.

Can't wait to see you inside. 🧵
