1

The Science of Well-Being: Foundations and Frameworks

Establishes the scientific and historical bedrock of positive psychology before any applied work begins. Students learn why this field exists, what it measures, and how to personally calibrate their own starting point — creating the baseline against which all later growth will be compared.

  • 1.1From Seligman's Lab to Your LifeIncluded
  • 1.2The PERMA Model: A Personal Well-Being AuditIncluded
  • 1.3Measuring What Matters: Well-Being Metrics and BaselinesIncluded
2

Positive Emotions and Savoring: Raising Your Affective Baseline

Moves from understanding to intervention. Students learn the neuroscience and evolutionary logic of positive emotions, then build a personal toolkit of evidence-based practices — gratitude, savoring, awe, and kindness — that reliably shift baseline positive affect upward. Each lesson pairs theory tightly with immediately actionable practice.

  • 2.1Broaden-and-Build: The Upward Spiral of Positive EmotionIncluded
  • 2.2Gratitude Science: Beyond the Gratitude JournalIncluded
  • 2.3Savoring, Awe, and Kindness: Expanding the Positive Emotion ToolkitIncluded
3

Character Strengths and Flow: Engagement at Its Deepest

Addresses the Engagement pillar of PERMA by introducing two of positive psychology's most powerful constructs: VIA Character Strengths and Csikszentmihalyi's Flow. Students discover their own strengths profile, learn to deploy strengths strategically in work and relationships, and engineer the conditions that reliably produce flow — the state of deepest intrinsic engagement.

  • 3.1VIA Character Strengths: Discovery and DeploymentIncluded
  • 3.2Using Strengths in Work and RelationshipsIncluded
  • 3.3Flow: Engineering Peak EngagementIncluded
4

Relationships and Meaning: The Deeper Pillars of Flourishing

Explores the R, M, and A pillars of PERMA — the dimensions most strongly linked to deep, lasting well-being and least reducible to individual effort alone. Students examine the science of high-quality connection, eudaimonic meaning, and intrinsic motivation, gaining both conceptual clarity and relational skills they can apply immediately.

  • 4.1High-Quality Connections and the Science of BelongingIncluded
  • 4.2Meaning, Purpose, and the Eudaimonic LifeIncluded
  • 4.3Accomplishment, Goals, and Intrinsic MotivationIncluded
5

Resilience, Cognitive Reappraisal, and Post-Traumatic Growth

Directly addresses the reality that flourishing doesn't mean avoiding adversity — it means responding to it resourcefully. Students build a full resilience toolkit grounded in cognitive neuroscience, Reivich & Shatté's resilience factors, Ellis & Beck's cognitive restructuring, and Tedeschi & Calhoun's post-traumatic growth research. This module is intentionally sequenced after emotional and strengths foundations are in place.

  • 5.1The Resilience Toolkit: How Resilient People ThinkIncluded
  • 5.2Cognitive Reappraisal: Changing the Meaning, Not the FactsIncluded
  • 5.3Post-Traumatic Growth: When Adversity Becomes a CatalystIncluded
6

Designing and Facilitating Flourishing: From Personal Plan to Professional Practice

The capstone module integrates everything into two parallel deliverables: a rigorous, personalized Flourishing Plan grounded in the student's own PERMA data, strengths, and resilience profile; and the facilitation skills needed to bring positive psychology to teams, classrooms, or clients with scientific credibility. Sequenced last because it requires all prior modules as raw material.

  • 6.1Habit Architecture for Well-Being: Stacking, Tracking, and SustainingIncluded
  • 6.2Facilitating Positive Psychology InterventionsIncluded
  • 6.3The Personal Flourishing Plan: Integration and CommitmentIncluded

Scott Ducharme

If you've picked up a book about happiness, tried a gratitude journal for two weeks, and then quietly abandoned it while wondering why nothing really changed — I want you to know that's not a character flaw. That's what happens when the tools don't come with an explanation of why they work, or when the explanation turns out to be thinner than the cover promised.

I built The Flourishing Mind for people who are done with thin. You're skeptical, and that skepticism is healthy. You've probably already read enough to know that hedonic adaptation is real, that the "happiness set point" research is complicated, that willpower-as-muscle is largely debunked. You don't need more inspiration. You need a rigorous framework, the honest research behind it, and practices that have actually been tested on human beings in controlled conditions — not assembled from vibes.

That's exactly what this course is. We begin where the science begins: with Seligman's PERMA model, not as a slogan but as a diagnostic tool. You'll audit your own life across five measurable dimensions and know, by the end of the first module, precisely where your well-being is strong and where it's fragile. From there, every subsequent module is a targeted intervention. Fredrickson's broaden-and-build theory tells us why positive emotions compound — so we learn savoring, awe, and kindness practices that leverage that mechanism. The VIA Character Strengths framework tells us what engagement actually looks like in a specific person — so you don't just study flow, you identify the conditions under which you enter it. Resilience isn't a personality trait you either have or don't; cognitive reappraisal is a learnable skill, and post-traumatic growth is a documented phenomenon. We cover all of it, clearly and completely.

The final module is where everything becomes yours. Your Personal Flourishing Plan is a real artifact — habit stacks, tracking metrics, goals grounded in your own strengths profile and well-being baseline. If you work with others as a coach, therapist, or educator, you'll also leave with facilitation skills and the scientific credibility to run these interventions confidently in your own professional context.

I won't promise you bliss. The research doesn't promise bliss either. What it does show, consistently and across cultures, is that people who understand how well-being works — and who apply that understanding with intention — live more engaged, more connected, more resilient, and more meaningful lives. That's what I want for you. Come and do the work.
