The Karate Mindset & Dojo Foundation
Before throwing a single punch, students learn what karate truly is — its philosophy, etiquette, and the mental framework that separates karate from mere fighting. This module sets the tone for every session that follows and ensures students train with the right attitude from day one.
- 1.1The Way of Karate: Philosophy, History & the Dojo CodeIncluded
- 1.2Dojo Etiquette Online: Rituals, Respect & Your Training SpaceIncluded
- 1.3The Belt Framework: Understanding Your JourneyIncluded
Foundations of Movement: Stances, Posture & Body Mechanics
Correct movement is the engine of karate. This module drills the fundamental stances and positional principles that all techniques depend on. Students develop balance, structural stability, and the body awareness to feel — not just see — when their form is right.
- 2.1The Karate Body: Posture, Centre of Gravity & Natural StanceIncluded
- 2.2Core Stances: Zanshin, Front Stance & Horse StanceIncluded
- 2.3Stepping & Directional Movement: Ayumi-ashi & Tsugi-ashiIncluded
Core Techniques: Blocks, Strikes & Kicks
This is the technical heart of the course. Students learn the essential offensive and defensive techniques of beginner karate with emphasis on correct mechanics, chamber positions, and the kime (focus) that makes each technique effective. Every technique is broken into phases so errors can be isolated and corrected.
- 3.1Blocks: Age-uke, Soto-uke & Gedan-baraiIncluded
- 3.2Hand Strikes: Oi-zuki, Gyaku-zuki & UrakenIncluded
- 3.3Kicks: Mae-geri, Yoko-geri Keage & Mawashi-geriIncluded
- 3.4Combination Drills: Linking Techniques in MotionIncluded
Kata: The Living Library of Karate
Kata are the soul of karate — choreographed sequences that encode fighting principles, self-defence applications, and moving meditation into a single practice. Students learn two complete kata from the ground up, understanding not just the moves but the meaning behind every technique.
- 4.1What Is Kata? Breaking Down Embusen, Kiai & ZanshinIncluded
- 4.2Heian Shodan: Learning the First Kata Step by StepIncluded
- 4.3Heian Nidan: Adding Complexity, Timing & Double TechniquesIncluded
- 4.4Performing Kata with Power, Flow & FocusIncluded
Self-Correction & Independent Training
Progressing without a sensei in the room requires a specific skill set: the ability to observe your own movement, diagnose errors accurately, and design sessions that keep improving. This module makes students self-sufficient, analytical practitioners who train smarter — not just harder.
- 5.1Reading Your Own Movement: Camera Setup & Self-ReviewIncluded
- 5.2Common Errors & How to Fix ThemIncluded
- 5.3Structuring Your Own Training SessionsIncluded
Grading, Progression & the Karate Lifestyle
The final module brings everything together — preparing students for their first grading submission, cementing the habits of a consistent practitioner, and ensuring they carry karate's values beyond the training session. Students leave with a clear path forward and the tools to keep progressing independently.
- 6.1Grading Preparation: Putting It All TogetherIncluded
- 6.2Training Consistency: Building a Lifelong Karate PracticeIncluded
- 6.3Karate Beyond the Dojo: Philosophy in Daily LifeIncluded
Who it's for
Is this you?
The Complete Beginner
Has always been curious about martial arts but never had a local dojo that fit their schedule or budget — this is their first real entry point.
The Lapsed Student
Trained for a year or two years ago, life got busy, and they want to pick up their technique where they left off without the pressure of a full dojo commitment.
The Fitness Seeker
Done with gym routines that feel hollow — they want a physical practice that builds strength, coordination, and mental discipline at the same time.
The Parent Training Together
Wants to share a meaningful physical practice with their child and be a credible training partner, not just a cheerleader on the sidelines.
The Remote Dweller
Lives far from any martial arts school and refuses to let geography decide what they can and can't learn.
The Focused Teen
Old enough to self-direct their learning and hungry for a structured challenge that goes beyond sports — karate's discipline and philosophy genuinely appeal to them.

Cato Bruarøy
If you've ever wanted to learn karate — and then talked yourself out of it because the timing wasn't right, the nearest dojo was too far, or life simply got in the way — I want you to know I built this school specifically for you.
I've spent years teaching karate in person, and the number-one thing I hear from students when they first walk through the door isn't excitement. It's embarrassment. "I should have started sooner." Or: "I tried once and stopped." That feeling is real, and it's completely undeserved. You don't owe karate a perfect entry point. You just need a door that's open when you are.
What I've tried to do here is translate everything that makes in-person karate instruction work — the careful eye on your posture, the instant correction when your elbow drops, the moment a technique finally clicks — into a format you can access from your living room. Every lesson is filmed with multiple angles. Every movement is broken down, then built back up. I don't skip the boring stuff, because the boring stuff is where real karate lives.
I won't promise you a black belt overnight or tell you this replaces years of dojo training. What I will promise is this: if you follow this curriculum with honest effort, you will move better, think sharper, and carry yourself with the quiet confidence that serious martial arts practice builds in every student. That's not a fitness outcome. It's a life outcome.
The dojo is open. Step onto the mat.
