1

The Anatomy of a Lesson-Bearing Story

Establish the foundational framework for understanding how stories carry lessons at a structural level. Students learn to see beneath the surface narrative and recognize the invisible architecture that gives every great story its moral power — before attempting to read or write lesson-bearing stories themselves.

  • 1.1What Makes a Story a Lesson in DisguiseIncluded
  • 1.2Moral Architecture — The Hidden Framework of Every Great StoryIncluded
  • 1.3Desire vs. Thematic Truth — The Engine of Emotionally Resonant StoriesIncluded
2

Reading Any Story for Hidden Wisdom

Build active reading and story-analysis skills so students can extract lessons from any source — published literature, film, fables, overheard conversations, or lived experience. This module develops the 'story alchemist's eye': the habit of seeing wisdom everywhere and knowing how to surface it.

  • 2.1Mining Published Stories, Films, and FablesIncluded
  • 2.2Reading Your Own Life as a StoryIncluded
  • 2.3Extracting Lessons from Lived Moments, Conversations, and ObservationsIncluded
3

Crafting Stories That Teach Without Preaching

Transition from analysis to creation. Students learn the specific craft techniques that allow a lesson to live inside a story organically — felt rather than announced. This module focuses on embedding lesson at the level of character, scene, consequence, and imagery rather than narration or dialogue.

  • 3.1The Lesson as the Story's DNA, Not Its ConclusionIncluded
  • 3.2Building the Lesson-Bearing Character ArcIncluded
  • 3.3Using Scene and Consequence to Do the Moral Heavy LiftingIncluded
4

Story Structures for Every Lesson

Survey the proven structural forms that lesson-bearing storytellers have used across cultures and centuries — the fable, the parable, the hero's journey, the personal essay, and the narrative anecdote. Students learn the unique strengths and ideal use cases of each form, and practice matching the right structure to the right lesson.

  • 4.1The Fable and the Parable — Ancient Forms, Modern PowerIncluded
  • 4.2The Hero's Journey as a Lesson ArchitectureIncluded
  • 4.3The Personal Essay and the Narrative AnecdoteIncluded
  • 4.4Matching the Right Form to the Right LessonIncluded
5

Story as a Teaching and Coaching Tool

Apply the skills developed in previous modules to real-world professional and educational contexts. Students learn how to design, deliver, and facilitate story-based learning experiences — in workshops, classrooms, coaching sessions, content, and public speaking — with intentionality and craft.

  • 5.1Designing Stories for Workshops, Classrooms, and Coaching SessionsIncluded
  • 5.2Telling the Story — Delivery, Presence, and the Listener's ExperienceIncluded
  • 5.3Facilitating Story-Based Reflection — Helping Others Find the LessonIncluded
6

Story Alchemy Practice — Integration and Original Work

Bring everything together. Students complete, refine, and share an original lesson-bearing story, receive structured feedback, and build the habits and systems needed to sustain a lifelong story alchemy practice. This module transforms course learning into a durable personal craft.

  • 6.1Developing Your Original Lesson-Bearing StoryIncluded
  • 6.2The Story Alchemist's Feedback ProcessIncluded
  • 6.3Building Your Ongoing Story Alchemy PracticeIncluded

Maybe you've felt it — that specific frustration of having something genuinely worth saying and not quite knowing how to say it in a way that lands. You write the lesson out plainly, and it sounds like a self-help pamphlet. You try to wrap it in a story, and the story feels thin, or the moral feels bolted on at the end like an afterthought. Or perhaps you're on the other side: you read a novel or watch a film and you know — you feel — that something important just happened to you, but you can't quite articulate what the story did, or how it did it.

I built The Story Alchemist for both of those frustrations, because I think they're really the same frustration. They're both symptoms of not yet having a language for what great stories do beneath the surface — the moral architecture, the tension between what a character wants and what the story is actually arguing, the way a single well-chosen scene can do the work that a thousand words of explanation never could.

What I've come to believe — and what this school is built on — is that story is a technology. An ancient, extraordinarily sophisticated technology for transmitting wisdom from one mind to another. Fables, parables, hero's journeys, personal essays: these aren't arbitrary forms. They're different delivery systems, each calibrated for a different kind of lesson and a different kind of listener. When you understand that, two things happen. First, you start reading every story you encounter differently — hungrily, carefully, the way a watchmaker reads a clock. Second, you start writing with a confidence and an intentionality that feels completely different from hoping it works.

This course moves through six modules that build on each other the way a good story does. We start with the anatomy of a lesson-bearing story — what's actually happening structurally when a narrative teaches us something. We move into reading practice, so you develop your eye for wisdom hiding in published stories, films, fables, and your own life. Then we work on the craft of embedding a lesson without preaching it — using character arc, scene, and consequence instead of exposition and conclusion. We study the great lesson-bearing forms and learn to match the right structure to the right truth. We look at story as a practical tool for teachers, coaches, and speakers. And we end with your original work: a lesson-bearing story you've developed, refined, and made fully your own.

No prior writing experience is required — only the conviction that story matters, and the willingness to look at it carefully. If that's where you are, I'd love to work with you. Come in curious. Leave with a practice.
