A note from your teacher
John Neyman Jr
If you've been a Christian for any length of time, you've probably felt it — that moment in a conversation when someone asks a sincere question about salvation, and you find yourself reaching for words that don't quite come. You know what you believe. But explaining why human goodness isn't enough, or what repentance actually requires, or what it means to trust Christ and not just believe facts about Him — that's harder than it sounds. And if the stakes weren't so high, it might not matter. But they are.
I created The Gospel Ground because I believe that clarity about the gospel isn't a luxury for theologians — it's a responsibility for every Christian who has been entrusted with it. Not because we need to master systematic theology before we can open our mouths, but because the gospel has a shape. It makes specific claims about who God is, what sin does, who Jesus is, and what His death and resurrection accomplish. When we soften those edges — even with good intentions — we risk offering people something that sounds like good news but doesn't carry its power.
This course walks through that shape deliberately. We begin where Scripture begins: with humanity as God made it, and what was lost in the fall. We move to the person of Christ — not just what He did, but who He is, and why it matters that He is both fully God and fully man. We examine what the cross and resurrection actually accomplished, and we hold the gospel up against the things that are commonly mistaken for it — moral improvement, religious sincerity, personal testimony. Then we spend significant time on the two responses Scripture calls for: repentance and faith. These are not obstacles to the gospel or additions to it — they are the way a person receives it. Understanding the difference between biblical repentance and mere regret, or between saving faith and intellectual agreement, changes how you share the gospel and how you help others examine their own hearts.
I want to be honest with you: this is not a course that will hand you a script and send you out the door. It's a course that will give you understanding — the kind that stays with you in conversations you didn't plan, in moments of doubt in your own heart, and in the quiet work of walking alongside someone who is just beginning to seek. By the end, you'll know how to put the gospel into your own words, how to answer honest questions with both accuracy and gentleness, and how to take someone's very first steps in faith seriously.
The gospel is the most important thing any of us will ever be asked to explain. I'd be honored to help you explain it well. Come join us at The Gospel Ground.
