Finally understand how music works

If you've ever sat down with your instrument, looked at a piece of sheet music or a chord chart, and felt a quiet panic set in — I want you to know that feeling is incredibly common, and it has nothing to do with your ability or your talent. It just means nobody has explained it to you in the right order yet. That's exactly why I built Theory Unlocked.

I've spent a long time helping people learn music, and the thing I hear most often isn't "this is too hard." It's "I wish someone had just explained it like that from the start." So that's the commitment I made with this course: every single idea gets introduced the way a good friend would explain it — with an analogy, with context, with a reason to care — before I ever use the proper terminology. You'll feel the concept click before you even know what it's called.

Here's what that looks like in practice. Before I talk about key signatures, we talk about what a key actually is and why music has one — what it would feel like without it. Before I introduce seventh chords, we talk about what a chord even is, and build up from scratch using intervals and thirds. By the time we get to writing a chord progression using Roman numerals, those symbols feel like shorthand for something you already understand, not a foreign language.

I also want to be honest about what this course is: it's a foundation, not a ceiling. What you learn here — reading treble and bass clef, understanding scales and keys, building and choosing chords, writing progressions — is the bedrock that every more advanced musical idea is built on. Students who come out the other side consistently tell me they listen to music differently. They hear the choices. That shift is what I'm after for you.
