If you're reading this, I'm guessing you've already had the thought a hundred times — somewhere between boarding a plane and staring out a hotel window — that you'd give almost anything to do this for a living. Write about the places you're already going. Get paid to notice things. Call this a career.
I know that feeling. I also know the wall that follows it: you sit down to figure out how, and suddenly you're drowning in contradictory advice, mystery "rates," editors who don't write back, and a nagging suspicion that maybe travel writing is only for people with the right connections or the right last name. It isn't. But nobody hands you the map.
That's what The Roaming Writer is. Not a collection of inspiration and vague encouragement — a working system. We start with how the travel media industry is actually structured, because most aspiring writers are pitching blind. Then we get into the craft and business of pitching itself: what a query letter needs to do in its first two sentences, how to find the right editor for a specific story, and how to follow up in a way that keeps doors open instead of slamming them. You'll write real pitches to real outlets during this school — not exercises for a drawer.
We cover the work that comes after the yes, too, because landing the assignment is only half the job. Writing and filing a publishable travel piece — whether it's a longform narrative, a destination guide, or a service feature — takes a different set of muscles than personal travel writing, and we build them. And then we get into the business side that most writing courses skip entirely: how to read a contract, what a kill fee clause should actually say, how to chase a late payment without burning a source, and how to handle taxes when your income arrives in USD and your coffee is priced in euros.
By the end, you'll have clips, a pitching practice, a contract vocabulary, and a six-month income plan that combines freelance assignments with complementary work — content marketing, guidebook opportunities, press trips — so that your income isn't dependent on any single editor saying yes. That's what sustainable looks like in this business. I built this school because I wish someone had handed it to me. Come in, settle down, and let's get you on the road with a byline to show for it.
