What Makes a Friend True

Lay the philosophical and emotional foundation of the course by defining what genuine, lifelong friendship actually looks like — and why it is so rare and so worth pursuing. Students examine the spectrum from acquaintance to true friend, explore love as the unifying force behind all deep bonds, and begin honest self-reflection about the friendships already in their lives.

  • 1.1The Friendship Spectrum: Acquaintances, Friends, and the True FewIncluded
  • 1.2Love as the Unifier: The Force Beneath Every True BondIncluded
  • 1.3Pets as True Friends: Recognising Unconditional Bonds Beyond the HumanIncluded
2

The Friendship Audit: Honest Mapping of Your Inner Circle

Students conduct a courageous, compassionate self-assessment of their current friendship landscape — identifying true bonds, diagnosing drift or imbalance, and understanding the patterns (in themselves and others) that have shaped their relational world. Honest mapping is the prerequisite for intentional change.

  • 2.1Taking Stock: Your Friendship Landscape Right NowIncluded
  • 2.2Patterns and Blind Spots: How You Show Up as a FriendIncluded
  • 2.3The Drift Diagnosis: When Good Friendships Go QuietIncluded
3

Love-Based Communication: Becoming the Friend People Never Want to Lose

The most important shift a student can make is becoming a better friend themselves. This module builds a concrete toolkit of love-based communication habits — deep listening, honest encouragement, courageous truth-telling, and consistent presence — that make genuine bonds not just possible but magnetic.

  • 3.1The Art of Truly Being Heard: Listening That Builds Lifelong TrustIncluded
  • 3.2Honest Love: Saying the Hard Thing, Keeping the BondIncluded
  • 3.3Celebrating Each Other: The Underrated Friendship SuperpowerIncluded
  • 3.4Showing Up: Consistency, Presence, and the Small Acts That Hold Bonds TogetherIncluded
4

Digital Intentionality: Making Technology Serve Your Real Bonds

Digital connection is not the enemy — unconscious digital connection is. This module helps students audit their relationship with technology, draw firm boundaries around how screens affect their deepest friendships, and redesign their digital habits so that every platform and tool serves real-world bonds rather than replacing them.

  • 4.1The Digital Illusion: Why More Followers Means Less ConnectionIncluded
  • 4.2Digital Boundaries With the People Who Matter MostIncluded
  • 4.3Using Digital Tools to Strengthen Real BondsIncluded
5

Healing the Heart: Loss, Drift, Betrayal, and Beginning Again

No friendship journey is without pain — loss, drift, and betrayal are universal experiences that, left unhealed, become walls around the heart. This module guides students through an honest, compassionate process of grieving friendship wounds, releasing what cannot be repaired, and re-opening to new true connection with wisdom and courage.

  • 5.1Grieving Friendship Loss: Giving It the Weight It DeservesIncluded
  • 5.2Betrayal and Broken Trust: When a True Friend Wasn'tIncluded
  • 5.3Opening Again: Building New True Friendships With Wisdom, Not WallsIncluded
6

Your True Bonds Life: Integration and the Long Game

The final module brings every thread of the course together into a personalised, sustainable friendship life plan. Students celebrate the bonds they already have, honour the pets and people who love them unconditionally, and leave with a clear, living roadmap for tending their truest connections for the rest of their lives.

  • 6.1The True Bonds Inventory: Celebrating What You Have Built and What You HaveIncluded
  • 6.2Your Living Friendship Plan: Tending True Bonds for a LifetimeIncluded

David Clilverd

I want to start by asking you something honest: when did you last feel truly known by another person?

Not liked. Not followed. Not included in a group chat. Known — the way a real friend knows you. The way they can tell something is off before you say a word, and they ask anyway. The way they love you in your worst season without keeping score.

If it's been a while, or if you're struggling to think of a name at all, I wrote this school for you. I also wrote the book it came from, True Bonds, because I believe the loneliness epidemic of our time is not a technology problem or a scheduling problem — it's a wisdom problem. Nobody teaches us how to be a great friend, or how to recognize one, or how to love the people in our lives with the kind of steady, unconditional care that makes a bond last decades.

What I've learned — through years of thinking, reading, writing, and living — is that genuine friendship is governed by a simple but radical idea: love is the unifier. Not agreement, not proximity, not shared history alone. Love. The kind that genuinely wants the best for the other person, even when that's inconvenient, even when it costs something. When that quality is present, a friendship can survive distance, silence, disagreement, and time. When it's absent, no amount of texting will fill the gap.

I also want to say something that tends to surprise people: some of the clearest lessons I've ever received about unconditional friendship have come from animals. A pet looks at you without judgment, meets you where you are every single day, and asks for nothing but your presence in return. There is a reason so many people say their dog or cat is their best friend — and in this school, we take that seriously, not as a joke, but as a profound truth about what real bonds feel like.

You don't need a hundred friends. In a whole lifetime, one true friend is good. Five is great. Ten is extraordinary. My goal is to help you find yours — and to become one in return. I'm glad you're here.
