Pick up a brush and actually paint

Hey — if you're reading this, I'm guessing you've thought about picking up watercolor more than once. Maybe you've bought supplies that are still sitting in the bag. Maybe you tried it years ago, made a mess, and quietly decided it "wasn't for you." I hear that a lot. And I want to tell you something honestly: watercolor isn't hard because you're not talented. It's hard because nobody explained the fundamentals first.

That's exactly what this school is designed to fix. Before we ever talk about painting a flower or a landscape, we slow right down and look at the one thing that controls everything in watercolor: the relationship between water and pigment. Once you genuinely understand that — once you can look at a loaded brush and predict what it's going to do — the whole medium opens up. Techniques that seemed like magic start making sense. Happy accidents stop being frustrating and start being useful.

I built Watercolor Studio because I wanted to teach the way I wish I'd been taught: no jargon, no assumptions, no "you'll figure it out." Every lesson is grounded in something tangible you can see and feel on the paper in front of you. We cover the core techniques — wet-on-wet, wet-on-dry, glazing, lifting, clean color mixing — but always in service of making something real. By the time you reach the guided projects, you're not just practicing exercises. You're painting a botanical, a sky, a landscape, a portrait, and finally a piece that's entirely your own.

I also want to say this: you don't need to be "an artist" to belong here. You just need to be curious and willing to make a few wonky paintings on the way to good ones. Some of my favorite things in watercolor happened by accident, and I'll show you how to make the most of those moments rather than painting over them in frustration.
