Learn to let watercolor lead — and know exactly where to follow
Watercolor Within teaches florals and portraits from the ground up — pairing hands-on technique with the observational mindset that turns unpredictable paint into purposeful art. No more frozen brushes. No more muddy messes you can't explain.

"I don't want you to paint like me — I want you to understand watercolor deeply enough that you can't help but paint like yourself."
— Lin Pacific

What you'll learn
What you'll be able to do
- Mix and control watercolor pigments with confidence, understanding how water ratios affect transparency, bloom, and edge quality
- Paint expressive floral compositions using layering, wet-on-wet, and wet-on-dry techniques to capture petal texture and depth
- Build convincing portrait studies in watercolor, handling skin tones, soft edges, and luminous washes without muddying colours
- Read and adapt to unexpected results — blooms, cauliflowers, tide lines — by reasoning through what the paint is doing and redirecting it creatively
- Develop a personal warm-up and observation ritual that trains the eye to see value, colour temperature, and edge variation before touching brush to paper
- Design and execute complete paintings from reference or imagination, making deliberate compositional and colour-harmony decisions at every stage

Who it's for
Is this you?
The Curious Beginner
She's never picked up a watercolor brush seriously before, but she's been sketching for years and is finally ready to add colour — she needs a school that starts at zero without treating her like one.
The Frustrated Self-Taught Painter
She's watched dozens of tutorials online but her paintings still go muddy and she doesn't know why — she needs the 'why behind the how' that step-by-step videos never explain.
The Returning Creative
She painted in her twenties, life got busy, and now she wants her practice back — this school's warm, reflective approach feels like a safe re-entry without judgment.
The Analytical Learner
He approaches painting the way he approaches everything — wanting to understand the system — so the pigment-behaviour science, transparency scales, and diagnostic problem-solving genuinely excite him.
The Portrait Dreamer
She loves faces and wants to capture people in watercolor, but every attempt at skin tones ends in grey — the luminous-wash and soft-edge portrait sequence is exactly what she's been searching for.
The Floral Enthusiast
She fills her home with flowers and has always wanted to paint them with the loose, flowing quality she sees in galleries — the wet-on-wet petal and expressive composition work speaks directly to her.

Lin Pacific
If you've ever sat down at your watercolor table, brush loaded, and then just... frozen — not because you don't care, but because you care so much and you're afraid of ruining what's in your head — I want you to know I understand that feeling completely. It's where so many of us begin. And it's exactly the feeling this school was built to dissolve.
I created Watercolor Within because I noticed something: most watercolor instruction teaches you what to do, but almost none of it teaches you how to think. How to look at a wash that's blooming sideways and decide, in real time, whether to chase it or let it lead. How to mix a skin tone that glows instead of goes grey. How to look at a blank sheet and feel curious rather than terrified. Techniques alone don't get you there. A framework does.
What we do here is work across two subjects — florals and portraits — that I chose very deliberately. Florals will teach you to release control and find beauty in flow. Portraits will teach you to observe with real precision, to hold a soft edge against a lost one, to keep luminosity alive across multiple washes. These two subjects train opposite instincts, and together they make you a more intuitive, more adaptable painter in any subject you take on.
Every section of this school is built around a cycle: you learn the technique, you understand why it behaves the way it does, you practice it in a low-stakes context, and then you bring it into a complete, expressive painting that's genuinely yours. We also spend real time — not a footnote — on what happens when things go sideways. Diagnosing problems, rescuing paintings in progress, painting through uncertainty. Because that's where real growth happens.
I'll be honest with you: watercolor is a medium that will humble you regularly, and I don't think that's a bad thing. What I want for you is not paintings that look "correct." I want you to develop the quiet confidence of someone who trusts themselves at the easel — who has a warm-up ritual, a problem-solving vocabulary, and a reflection practice that turns every session, good or messy, into useful information. That's what independence as an artist actually feels like. And that's what Watercolor Within is here to give you. I'd love for you to join us.
