Write Your Memoir: Turn Your Life Into a Story Worth Reading

Before a single word of memoir is drafted, writers must unearth the emotional core that makes their story worth telling. This module helps students identify their defining subject, the central question driving their narrative, and the specific slice of life their memoir will claim — separating it from autobiography and life history.

A memoir is not a diary. It must be built like a story — with a shape, a structure, and a curated sequence of scenes that create rising tension and payoff. This module teaches students how to select the right events from their life, arrange them into a compelling arc, and understand why structure is an act of meaning-making.

This is the core writing craft module. Students move from knowing what to write to learning how to write it — with specificity, sensory detail, lived-in dialogue, and interiority. The goal is to move from flat summary ('I was sad') to immersive, embodied scenes that put readers inside the experience.

Voice is the quality that makes readers trust a narrator, root for them, and keep turning pages. This module helps students discover and develop their own distinctive narrative voice — including the older, wiser narrator looking back on the younger self living through the experience.

Writing memoir means writing about real people, real events, and your own most vulnerable experiences. This module addresses the emotional and ethical challenges that stop most memoir writers in their tracks: guilt about writing about family, fear of getting things wrong, shame about disclosure, and the perfectionism and blocks that shut down the creative flow.

The final module brings everything together in a single, high-stakes deliverable: a polished, publishable first chapter. Students also build the practical infrastructure — routine, accountability, and a manuscript roadmap — needed to carry the work beyond the course and complete the full book.
