How to Read a Mark Scheme Like an Examiner (And Stop Losing Easy Marks)

You studied the topic. You understood it. You wrote something reasonable in the exam. And then the mark scheme gave you zero.
That stings — because it isn't really a knowledge problem. It's a language problem. Mark schemes for IGCSE, GCSE, AS, A-Level, IAS, and IAL sciences are written in a very specific dialect, and until you learn to read them the way an examiner does, you'll keep dropping marks you genuinely earned in your head but failed to earn on the page.
Let me show you how to fix that.
Mark Schemes Are Not Worked Answers — They're Checklists
The single biggest mistake students make is reading a mark scheme the way they'd read a textbook explanation. A mark scheme is a checklist of creditworthy points. Each bullet point is a discrete unit of credit. You either hit it or you don't — partial credit within a single marking point almost never exists.
What this means in practice: your answer can be largely correct, beautifully written, and scientifically sound, and still score zero if it doesn't contain the specific credited idea. Length and confidence do not earn marks. The right word in the right place does.
Spot the "Keyword or Equivalent" Trap
Open any Cambridge or Edexcel mark scheme and you'll see phrasing like:
"increases the rate of reaction / speeds up the reaction"
Notice the slash. That slash means either phrasing is acceptable. But notice what's not listed — "makes the reaction happen faster" or "the reaction goes quicker." Those might seem equivalent to you. The examiner may or may not accept them, depending on whether the mark scheme adds (ORA) (or reverse argument) or (WTTE) (words to that effect).
Your action: When you see (WTTE) next to a mark point, that's your green light — the concept matters more than the exact word. When you don't see it, treat the listed phrasing as close to mandatory as possible.
The Anatomy of a 6-Mark Extended Response
Extended response questions (the "describe and explain" or "evaluate" style) feel like essays, but examiners mark them against a levels-of-response grid. Here's how those grids actually work:
- Level 1 (1–2 marks): Simple, isolated facts. No linking. No causation.
- Level 2 (3–4 marks): Some correct science, beginning to connect ideas.
- Level 3 (5–6 marks): Coherent explanation with clear cause-and-effect chains, covering most of the indicative content.
The jump from Level 2 to Level 3 almost always comes down to one thing: explicit connective language. Examiners are looking for words like therefore, because, which means that, as a result, and this causes. If you list correct facts without connecting them, you're capped at Level 2 no matter how much you know.
Drill this habit: After every factual statement in an extended answer, ask yourself — so what happens next? Write that answer down. That's your connective sentence, and it's what pushes you into the top level.
Comparative Questions Demand Comparative Answers
If the question says "explain why rate of reaction is higher at 40 °C than at 20 °C," the mark scheme will almost certainly require a comparison — not just a description of what happens at 40 °C.
A common losing answer: "At 40 °C, particles have more energy and collide more frequently, so the rate is higher."
A mark-scoring answer: "At 40 °C, particles have greater kinetic energy than at 20 °C, so a higher proportion of collisions exceed the activation energy, resulting in a higher rate."
The difference is the phrase "than at 20 °C" and the word "proportion." Both are doing heavy lifting in the mark scheme. The moment a question contains the word than, compared to, or difference, write a sentence that physically contains both conditions side by side.
How to Use a Mark Scheme as a Revision Tool (Not Just a Check)
Most students look at a mark scheme after a past paper to see what they got wrong. That's useful — but you're leaving most of the value on the table.
Here's a better method:
- Do the question. Write your full answer.
- Read the mark scheme point by point before looking at your answer.
- Highlight each credited point in the mark scheme, then go back and see whether your answer contains the substance of each one.
- Rewrite your answer so it hits every credited point — even the ones you got right — using the mark scheme's language as a guide.
Rewriting correct answers sounds like wasted time. It isn't. It's how you build the instinct for examiner phrasing so that in an actual exam, under pressure, the right words come out automatically.
The Honest Truth About "Easy Marks"
There's no such thing as a mark you're guaranteed to get. But there absolutely are marks that hinge entirely on phrasing — on writing decreases instead of goes down, on writing concentration of oxygen is lower instead of there's less oxygen, on including a unit when the mark scheme says (unit required).
These aren't tricks. They're the discipline of scientific communication, and the mark scheme is showing you exactly what that discipline looks like at every grade boundary.
Learn the language. The content you already know will finally start counting.
